Grassroots Hurricane Relief

$11,223 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 220 people in 3 months
We, a grassroots community group, are answering the call for decentralized relief efforts around the impending Hurricane Florence.
Our community group (Blue Ridge Autonomous Defense) is based in Western NC and South western VA and focuses on community support and emergency medical response.
We are working with Mutual Aid Disaster Relief as a decentralized mutual aid network to connect with those most adversely affected.
www.mutualaiddisasterrelief.org

All funds raised will be spent directly on travel and supplies that will be taken directly to folks in areas most affected by this potentially devastating storm. (refer to the profile image of this campaign for a list of supplies we will be purchasing with donations.) We are collecting medical/first aid supplies, food, water, baby supplies, basic necessities, toiletries, and supplies for helping with decontamination, clean up, and rebuilding. We are prepared to provide disaster relief between Washington, NC and Wilmington, NC.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo was quoted as saying, "once this storm is upon us, we're not going to be able to send emergency personnel out to rescue you."
In the face of this reminder we acknowledge that WE keep each other safe, and that in times of crisis, we are all we have.  Thanks for your generous support, and well wishes.

In Love and Solidarity,
Blue Ridge AD

It's Tuesday September 25th and our crew is moving into the cleanup/rebuild process of relief work. In Lumberton especially, there is a need to help gut and rebuild homes that have been severely damaged by the flooding. We need cleaning supplies, tools and construction supplies. Please continue to share and donate as this (often overlooked) phase of relief begins. Thank you all so much!

It's Saturday September 22nd: a couple folks from our crew have arrived in Lumberton to aid in the Indigenous led disaster relief effort in this rural majority Indigenous, Black and Latinx community. There are many neighborhoods still underwater and people are still stranded needing basic needs met. Many folks in flooded areas are forced to wade daily through water contaminated with waste from pig and chicken factory farms. Meanwhile in Wilmington many neighborhoods are dealing with the health affects of caved in ceilings/roofs. FEMA is telling people not to touch or remove any of the fallen debris until they inspect it but that could take weeks and people are already feeling sick from the encroaching mold, fallen insulation, and asbestos from these old houses. Downtown Wilmington is currently flooding and waters are expected to continue to rise from the Cape Fear River. There is *so* much work to be done alongside folks in Wilmington and Lumberton. Please continue to donate and share!!

It's Tuesday, September 18th and we are now fully moved into and operating out of a 4,000 square foot non profit space in the middle of one of the most affected areas in Wilmington. As power is slowly restored, this low income neighborhood us being told they won't have power for at least another week. People are experiencing sickness from the air conditions of caved in houses and from eating expired food. We are distributing food, water, baby supplies, toiletries, first aid and otc medicine, and have a first aid clinic set up in the space. We are distributing supplies as fast as we can get them in from air drops and now some grocery stores are open and we will be able to directly buy supplies in town. Please continue to donate as we continue relief efforts.

Relief efforts update: it's Sunday and heavy rains brought much worse flooding while high winds brought down more power lines and trees. Water may soon not be safe to drink as the utility company is about to run out of fuel to maintain the water treatment facility and fuel can not be brought in through roads. We are using the kayaks to bring folks supplies, chainsawing downed trees and limbs, and heloing fix caved in roofs. There is so much qork to be done so please continue to send donations and share.
