Autism Service Dog for Addison M
Addison is a highly intelligent and loving soon to be 9 year old. Many people that see her can't see the difficulties and autism diagnosis at first glance or even when they meet her. She is considered "high functioning " but that label is deceiving to all. It can be difficult for the child, care giver and siblings when a child has a public meltdown. As she grows, we have faced anxiety, fear, panic attacks, sensory overload and meltdowns, sleep problems that add to meltdowns. This adds to the difficulty that she can often have with peers. She has fought apraxia to gain speech so that she now can carry on conversation as her peers do, but often can't explain her mood or feelings.
We need some techniques to help her calm her body, and gain composure and sleep. So I began searching for the perfect solution. A service dog that is trained to give my child what I can not.
Confidence, calm, coping mechanisms, and a social connector to peers.
I found Ry-con service dogs of Apex, NC. They train briards to be this tool for autistic people and those with other neurological conditions. After speaking to Mark Mathis, owner of Ry-Con I felt confident that this breed and organization was a fit for our family. Mark started training briards 10 years ago when his son was diagnosed with autism. He is certified as a NC state approved Service Dog Trainer with a specialty in autism service dogs. The organization has been featured on news, Autsim speaks, and many other outlets. The facilities were clean, well kept, and all the staff we have met are friendly and have a passion for the job. Visit their Facebook page and website to see the dogs in training as well. I was thoroughly impressed with the training and care put into these dogs that will serve so many families.
A briard is a wonderful dog for this job, they are herding dogs and want to be with their people. I have witnessed first hand why the breed is called a "heart wrapped in fur." They are loyal, protective, and intelligent dogs.
Autism service dogs increase social interaction for these kids and we can also discourage repetitive behaviors that can be harmful like picking, nail biting, or other things. These constant companions decrease sensory overload, improve sleep, and overall calm the child so that they act less anger or aggression.
We went for a visit and the effect was amazing! Addison didn't have the extra body movements that I normally see. We met a few trainees and then we met miss Okami. I truly believe she picked Addison to be her girl. The bond was instant! We are going to pick her up in a few weeks. Our poodles were introduced and all went well. Addison is counting the days. This is all on an accelerated time line because Okami is already trained! If you would like to help us bring this amazing girl home, please help. We appreciate any and all help given and our story shared. I will update the price when we know the total needed. We will use all extra money to pay for expenses to be in Raleigh for training, insurance, food, and supplies for her. I hope to be a blessing to someone else in the future to pay it forward.
With gratitude,
The Matthews Family
