IAC Science Olympiad Needs You!
There’s gnome place like home (ha!) with the IA Central Science Olympiad team: The Gnomes.
A little about our school:
The International Academy is a high school that attracts students who are passionate about learning. At this school, students are challenged by the full IB diploma program to investigate the subjects which they are passionate about and become involved in related activities.
However, our school facilities are currently based within a (very) old elementary school, and oftentimes, supplies used for Science Olympiad are purchased using the team members' personal wallets (thus any funding is greatly appreciated).
About Science Olympiad:
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization which sponsors competitions at the regional, state, and national level within the US. These competitions include 23 events which pertain to different scientific disciplines, such as physics, engineering, biology, and earth science.
About our team:
International Academy has two Science Olympiad teams, with 15 students on the Varsity team and 15 on the Junior Varsity team. We work together in small teams or partnerships on events like Air Trajectory, Bridge Building, Protein Modeling, and Robot Arm in preparation for the year’s competitions.
The team has shown significant progress throughout the years; scoring 3rd place at Northview HS in Ohio, 2nd Place at the Stevenson HS competition, 7th place at University of Michigan, 2nd place for Varsity and 1st place for Junior Varsity at Regionals, and most recently 7th place at States.
Currently we are preparing for the States competition, which will take place on April 27th, at Michigan State University. In 2017, we placed 2nd at States and were able to qualify for Nationals for the first time! This year, our goal is to rank in the top two places at States again so that we may advance to Nationals (May 31st-June 1st) at Cornell University in New York.
However, covering the costs of going to several invitationals this year, as well as for the upcoming States tournament, means that each of our team members must fundraise a minimum of $300, just to break even. Additionally, if we are to advance to Nationals, that figure may grow significantly. Thus, any donation is appreciated to help our team pay for States and the past invitationals.
We are very proud of how far we have come since the beginning of the year, and furthermore, how unified the team has become. We not only strive to improve ourselves in science but also bond and grow together as a team, and to appreciate and always support every teammate. This is the quality that distinguishes the IAC Gnomes from other Science Olympiad teams.
For a sense on how donation amounts are structured, please refer to the information below:
$10 - 1 Meal for a team member
$20 - Funding a study event for the year
$40 - 1-2 Textbooks for study events
$75 - Registration fee for an invitational
$100 - Funding 1 building event for the year
$150 - A hotel room for 4 team members
$300 - Expected cost for 1 team member for the year
We appreciate each and every contribution that you make. Every cent counts towards our journey to Nationals!
