Atlas's Legal Name Change
Maricopa County Cost of Changing Name
Hello family, friends, and strangers. My name is Atlas Pillar...well, not legally anyways. I am a transgender man living in Phoenix, Arizona, and I am attempting to legally change my first name to "Atlas," the name which makes me feel most comfortable, and the name which I have addressed myself as for years, if only in my mind.
While my family, educators, and employers have been relatively willing to address me by Atlas, I still at large am addressed by my birthname, and have to craft awkward explainations as to why I would choose to be called a name which is not grounded in any legal document. That might have sounded weird, so I will try to explain in a different way. Typically, when a person goes by a different name than their legal birthname, it is a variation of their legal name, or it is their middle name. "Atlas" does not relate, in any way, to my birth given names, and therefore seems "out of the blue" to many.
I do not hate my birthname, but I hate being called it. Why? Because for my entire life (19 years), my birthname has meant girl, daughter, sister, she/her....it has been feminized by socialization. Basically being called by my birthname makes me feel disjunctive, like the girly-girl, drama queen, hyper-feminine little girl I was painted as growing up. But that is not me, and I do not want to feel this way anymore. I want to be called by my name: Atlas.
The cost of petitioning for a name change in the Maricope County is $319! As much as I would like to pay for my name change out of pocket, I am a poor, dollar-scraping college student who lives paycheck to paycheck. This is not something I take lightly—asking for charity—and it has taken me a lot of internal debating to humble myself before you today. But I cannot wait any longer. I cannot continue to be addressed as someone else. I NEED to take these steps to make me a happier, healthier person.
If you are willing and able, any donation would be a step towards this enormous goal. I would love to pay every single person back, and if you you like me to reimburse you after I am able to change my name, please leave a note with your donation. It may not be right away, it may be a couple of years from now, but I will find a way to get it back to you. Thank you for taking the time to hear me out.
