On April 8th, 2019 The Catherine Hamby, 81 and David Hamby, 51  lives had  unexpectedly changed as they were displaced from their lakeside home in Richmond, VA of 55+ years. Catherine was in her living room when she noticed a smell of something burning. She made her way to the kitchen as she thought she possibly left a burner on in the stove. Upon entering the kitchen she looked down the hall and noticed smoke coming from her son David's bedroom. Catherine was able to get her sons attention who was outside doing yard work who was able to act fast and luckily get into the home to assist his mother out of the home as she has limited mobility. David than attempted to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher when he received minor burns to his face. David's wounds have since healed and both are blessed to have escaped the fire with their lives.

The Hamby family are continuing to cope with the loss of majority of their personal belongings from the home and processing where they will be living next. They have been receiving assistance from several non profits such as the Red Cross that helped assist in covering the expenses of Catherine's medications that were lost in the fire, temporary assistance for shelter and has been linked to several church's and non-profits to assist with food pantry and clothing.  Catherine and David are currently staying with her daughters family. Now making up 12 people sharing a 3 bedroom home. Catherine has been sleeping and sharing a bed with her daughter given the limited space in the home.  David has been sleeping in his van outside of his sisters home on several occasions since the fire as he has continued to be active in cleaning up the rubble left in the ashes of what remains. After working the majority of the day with the clean up process David has also been sleeping on a cot in a shed that remained safely intact on the property.

The purpose of this campaign is to assist the family in rebuilding the home from the ashes or securing funds for new housing options as her home owners insurance policy had been cancelled prior to the fire. Catherine and David are hopeful to be able to rebuild their family home. The Hamby family greatly appreciates any efforts of your donations and all funds will go directly to them to assist in rebuilding their lives. In lieu of any donations that maybe collected any handyman, local contractors, or volunteers within the community who maybe able or willing to offer assistance in the means of clean up process and getting an estimate to repair their family home would feel free to reach out as any help would be more than appreciated.

Thank you for considering and reviewing the campaign.
