Eric Kent is a simple man living a simple life. He has no close family, no car, and few earthly possessions. He works as a part-time sales associate for a department store and in his personal time, travels each week by public bus from Summerville (and back again) to volunteer at the South Carolina Aquarium. He’s done that for nearly 16 years and has given over 3,100 hours.
Throughout the years, Eric has endured an escalating struggle of dental complications that have caused myriad other problems in his life. Every once in a while, though, the stars align. Recently, Dr. Greg Bottone of Gentle Family Dentistry in Mt. Pleasant and his staff graciously agreed to see Eric for a free consultation. It was a surprisingly emotional visit for everyone.
During that visit, Eric discovered that his extensive dental problems will involve major oral surgery. His few remaining teeth require extraction and some of the bone(s) in his lower jaw must be removed. The migrating oral infection from several abscesses has been impacting his overall health. He will need multiple appointments and his healing will be long term.
Incredibly, Dr. Bottone, Dr. Stephen Michel, and the entire staff of Gentle Family Dentistry have stepped forward on faith, believing we will raise the funds necessary to cover only the actual costs and lab fees for everything Eric needs done…or $16,483. The usual cost for such work? $50,000. They fully expect that Eric will probably start feeling better once all of the procedures are finished and, most importantly, the results will change his life. They've already begun the process.
The generosity doesn’t stop there. The Dentistry staff are excited and eager to be a part of Eric’s journey. They’ve volunteered to stay as late as necessary to assist in accommodating Eric’s appointments, have offered to help with transportation, and have even bought groceries for Eric to facilitate his recovery at home.
There are so many good people in the world; we just have to find them. And that’s what it’s all about really: good people helping good people. Please help us. Help us help Eric.
