Hello folks,

I have been working in Human Rights issues for many years. Never in my life would I imagine having someone close to me become a victim of a hate crime.

On Friday October 30th 2015, Asma along with her friends and their children were dining at Applebees In Coon Rapids, MN. Another patron sitting in another booth overheard her speaking in a foreign language.  She yelled and insulted Asma for not speaking "American". The patron eventually threw a drink at her and smashed Asma's face with a beer mug.

Asma suffered trauma all over her face due to this attack. Her injuries required 15 stitches all over her face with busted lips, cut on top of her eye brow and cuts all over her face.

Asma is one of our closest friend for over ten years.

Asma is currently going through care dealing with her injuries. Any donation received will go directly to her well being.

All donations will be handed to her to pay for her medical bills and other expenses as she goes through this ordeal.

I know in my heart that Minnesota is not defined by this incident.

Let us stand together against hate and help Asma get back to her feet again.

Thank you so much for your help and we are asking you to share this page with everyone that you know.

Warmly,
Hassanen
Friends of Asma

We want thank everyone tremendously for their words of encouragement and the show of compassion towards Asma. This is a great example of what happens when good people come out and share their spirit of love to one another. Tonight, we are ending the donation as we have surpassed our goal and are overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. We can’t express how your words and generosity has made a difference in uplifting Asma throughout this ordeal. Each and every word of encouragement has shown her that there are many many good people in this world. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

Our friend is getting better as we encourage, pray, hope and support her as she goes through this ordeal.

On Sunday Nov 8th, we will have the solidarity rally at the Coon Rapids City Hall at 2PM. We hope you would be able to attend. Please see the Facebook event link for information:

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! 171 donors in less than 8 hours and we have reached our goal! So much love that warms our hearts. We promise to do right with Asma and take care of her initial bills. We are honored and it would be unethical for us to accept more or increase our goal. We love you all for the love that you showed and Asma cried, but this time she cried tears of joy when I told her that we reached our goal! Thank you again! :-)

Really?!???! Megan? Are you kidding me??? Most people have co-pays. Lots of times insurance doesn't cover certain procedures or counseling. And if you miss work, many, many places do not have paid sick leave. You know what's not right? You feeling the need to comment on other people's generosity or insinuate anything about anyone's motives. I would love it if all of her expense were covered and she had a little bit left over to do something healing for herself. Your comment is either thinly veiled racism or just plain meanness. Either way it's not welcome here.

Um, Megan, you are aware that most people don't have Cadillac insurance plans and usually have a deductible of around $5,000, right? I do, however, hope Asma and her family sue the perpetrator of this incident, as well as getting justice in the legal system. The attacker already has a history of assault and at least one previous criminal charge and conviction. If all you can do is worry about what an assault victim and/or her family may do with the money, don't give any. Go watch the media, believe the hype, and be thankful no one assaults you with a beer stein for doing anything that might offend them.

Vicki you are an idiot and ignorant beyond belief. Why would the money go back to the state? In reality, the perpetrator of this crime, the piece of arrogant, ignorant, evil, white trash with a history of criminal assault and other issues, should be responsible for giving money to the state for the cost of the police officers and others involved in helping this woman. And that criminal should also be responsible for paying the state for her room and board while she is in jail for her crime. I also hope this page raises more that the requested funds so that Asma can hire a lawyer to sue the criminal for the emotional and medical cost of this horrible, horrible act of pure idiocy and evil.

Megan, that's a completely misinformed and idiotic thing to say. People who suffer significant injuries almost always end up paying out of their own pockets for co-pays, missed work, etc. Especially when they require surgery. That is why people file personal injury claims - because people are often left with thousands of dollars to pay even after insurance. Unfortunately, with intentional acts there are less options for compensation; she will have to press charges against this woman. Even if she does press charges, this woman is obviously a low life piece of shit who probably spent the last of her money on that Applebees meal, so it is extremely unlikely she will actually be able to recover any money from pressing charges. These people are asking for $5,000, which is totally reasonable given the pain, suffering, and additional costs she will likely have to pay from the incident. You would change your tune really quickly if you ended up in her position. If you don't want to donate, don't donate. Nobody is making you. But don't be an idiot trolling an account that was set up to help someone.

Megan, you are the worst. Why on earth would you feel the need to comment to this women when you have no idea what her financial situation is? I hope you are ashamed of your actions and your words. Have you ever been seriously hurt? 5k is a very reasonable amount to ask for, that's about what my insurance deductible is, plus i'm sure she missed work and she probably will have legal expenses. 5k wont even begin to cover all that. You need to keep your ignorance to yourself.

Not singling any one comment out, but for anyone who has experienced any type of medical situation with family or for themselves (I've experienced both w/in the last 8 months), I can assure you, even if you have full medical coverage (or someone else caused the trauma to you), you can still be on the hook for lots and lots of money. Not to mention, as others have touched on; missed time from work, punitive damages, deductibles, expenses incurred stemming from incident etc... The list goes on. Frankly, I was surprised to see that $5000 was all they were looking for. Ambulance rides can be as high as 4K, stitching (especially this amount) approaching 1K & even just a few hours in the ER (let alone a hospital room overnight) between $250-$750. Educate yourself on this sort of thing before you get all high and mighty behind your keyboard because the only person you're ultimately insulting is yourself.

Honestly Megan, Even if what you're saying is true. What's not right about this young woman getting help after being viciously attacked the way she was? I'm sure she missed work, I'm sure she had co-payments, just the pain and suffering along is worth at least that much and I'm pretty sure that pig that hit her doesn't have anything to give.

Hi Asma, I hope you are doing well and recovering from the vicious and unnecessary attack that you suffered as a result of an ignorant, hateful, and obviously troubled person. As a fellow Somali and American, I am completely outraged that someone would behave in this manner and think that they have the right to attack someone because of the language they are speaking or choose to speak. This woman said that you were not speaking "American". We all know that this woman is clearly misinformed because there is no such a thing as a language called "American". As a matter of fact, though English is the dominant language in the U.S. it is not considered an official language but assumed to be. It is a de facto language and the constitution or Federal law does not state an official language! All of this is irrelevant though because there are people who speak multiple languages(myself included) and it is a remarkable thing and something to be celebrated! To those who are on here speaking negatively about minorities or immigrants and saying they are all dependent on welfare, etc look at this: http://www.atlnightspots.com/african-immigrants-have-the-highest-academic-achievement-in-the-us/ http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2015/5/14/growing-african-immigrant-population-is-highly-educated-underemployed We work hard and love America just like other Americans! If you don't want to donate to this campaign to help this young lady, then simply don't, that is your right. Just keep your filth, racism, and ignorance to yourself though. Most Americans do not share your views and you are what is wrong with our country, not immigrants or minorities.

Annnnnd of course the worthless, illiterate white trash of 'merka junk up the country for the rest of us. Leave it to "Jodie," a solid trash-name if ever I've heard one (I'm a white, male, first-generation college student from a small, dead factory town in Ohio, btw; poor ≠ stupid!), to be too stupid to understand that we speak "English" here in the U.S. and not "American." Keep wallowing in your filth, in debt up to your beady little eyeballs, Jodie, continually voting against your best interests because your tiny little brain cannot comprehend even the most basic of logic. Now if only we could remove her and the white trash commenters here from the gene pool. In the meantime, I'll be donating to this beautiful woman and her family. P.S. - To Megan and all the other garbage-people bigots here: if I had a nickel for every shack-dwelling gofundme campaign trying to raise money for every "Cody" I see here trying to pay his medical bills, I'd be a rich man. Why don't you go leave nasty comments on their sites? Oh, that's right, that's because you're racists, bigots and of zero value to society.
