Ashley's health struggles began as an infant when she was diagnosed with a genetic disorder that caused her liver to fail. At age 6, on 10/10/10, Ashley received  a successful liver transplant.

Her health struggles have continued as she and her family worked with doctors to repair the damage to done to her body during the years her liver didn't work properly and she is now facing a truly heartbreaking prognosis. She is going blind.

Retinal degeneration, likely caused by the toxins that built up in her body before her liver transplant, has continued and is progressing faster than originally thought. Recent tests show that in the last 11 months she has lost the same amount of sight as what doctors typically expect a person with this condition to lose in 5 years.

Doctors are predicting that she will be without sight within two to four years.

Please help her family give this sweet child spectacular memories to visualize after her sight is gone. All money raised here will be used for experiences and related travel expenses for the family as they give her as many experiences as possible before her sight is gone.

OMG I honestly do not know where to begin.

In just over a week we have not only met but surpassed our initial goal - a number that both her family and I thought was kind of a long shot. We just wanted to find some extra money to help pay for travel expenses.
Thank you from the very depths of our hearts and souls to all who have donated to make this sweet girl's bucket list be a truly amazing one!

Many heartfelt thanks go out to our anonymous donor who today singlehandedly took us from 50 to 100 percent of our goal. May all that is good in the universe come to you.

Best,

Catherine

(P.S. We only increased the goal because, as shown today miracles - whatever or whoever their source - apparently really do happen. Thank you so much again to all who have donated so far!)

May you continue to see as much of this beautiful world as possible. I work with your Aunt Cindy and she has told me your story. I love your positive attitude, keep it up and you will go far!

I understand the difficulty of sight loss, as I am legally blind from retinal degeneration. However, this reality has not stopped me from fulfilling personal accomplishments. Instead it has fueled them - my eyes are a part of me, they are not all of me. I live in Guatemala (from the US originally), am fiercely independent, am getting ready to hike the tallest peak in Central America this weekend, and have no intention of slowing down just because I can't see the way others do. I deeply sympathize with Ashley's diagnosis and I know what a profound, confusing thing it is to be told that you will lose your sight. I know how hard it is for parents too. I urge Ashley not to think of this as a 'bucket list' because that indicates things she will do this time but never again. Very much on the contrary, she can do all these things over and over again! I go to concerts, I travel around the world, I go out to dinner, I climb volcanoes, I have a very beautiful and supportive girlfriend, I started two nonprofit projects. Maybe because of my eyes, I am very stubborn about doing these things and not letting people tell me that it's not a good idea. Ashley is young and she has her whole life ahead of her. She can do everything else anyone else can do! I appreciate the idea of a visual carnival because it is true that she will not enjoy certain things the way others do. But she will still enjoy them and she will adapt to her circumstances. I welcome Ashley and the whole family to visit anytime to Guatemala, this is a land of rich scenes - visual, auditory, and otherwise - every day of the year. Don't stop living, Ashley, you just get to live in your own unique way! Enjoy all the adventures ahead and remember them dearly. But know that you can do them again. All the best, Ashley. Take it from me, a 40-something blind guy living a glorious life in Guatemala, it's a big, beautiful, stimulating world out there and, no matter what your eyes do, you can embrace it with a smile, confidence, and an optimistic spirit!
