My name is Shannon McRandle. I was dx with Ankylosing Spondylitis and Stage 3 Anal Cancer in April 2013. I underwent chemo/radiation and now AS treatment. The radiation destroyed my wbc/rbc production, gave me osteoporosis , put me through menopause and killed the normal production of cells in my body . AS treatment is not working for me. Alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage and chiropracty are not covered by insurance and I have not worked since my cancer. We are living pay check to paycheck bc of the lack of a second income. I do as much community service as possible to give back to those worse off than I am, although I've had to slow down a little lately while preparing for my second shoulder surgery. My goal is to raise enough money to take 6 months and work very hard using uncovered eastern healing techniques to get as close to normal as possible. I'm now housebound with trips out only to feed my children and get them to and from school. The pain is drowning me and I do not want to function on opiods or become so weakend that I can no longer even care for my children. My husband is deployed for the ninth time and working a dangerous job to keep us all safe but also to try his hardest to keep our heads above water. It's not enough. As I become less and less able to function at the smallest tasks, my doctors seem less and less able to help me, but worse, don't really care. Nor will they sign disability paperwork. I have to heal for my children, my husband. My two sons have recently been dx with AS as well and I need to have the strength to be there for them. Anything helps. I need hope back to be around long enough to get my boys through high school... then I can let go. God bless each and every one of you. Please pray for strength for me to help my children and for my husband's safe return. To each of you, I wish you love, happiness and above all, health.

Hi everyone, just a quick update. I hope you've all kept warm through these awful snowstorms. It's been crazy. Three weeks ago I received an osteoporosis infusion of Reclast. I had no idea of the awful side effects it can cause. I ended up in the ER the next day where they accused me of lying about the pain I was in and treating it with benadryl, ativan and reglan. My RA dr that gave me the infusion was so taken aback by my body's reaction to it, he instructed the ambulance to seek treatment for me at the local ER. I spent the following two weeks unable to get in and out of bed without assistance, in pain worse than my appendix exploding. I saw pain management that next week. They have no reference for pain from RA drugs so they prescribed my usual emergency pain meds to be taken every six hours. It's been nearly a month now and I am still struggling to dress, shower or even walk down the stairs. My drs are unable to do anything to help, and honestly, I don't think any of them believe me completely. I've done a great amount of research on Reclast since this happened. People who have reactions like mine are burdened with excruciating pain for months, even years and some actually die from complications with this medication. I was never warned. I don't think the drs are even told about some of this. It was given to me bc my bone density scan showed the radiation hadn't just put me through menopause but had also basically killed my bones. The dr compared my scan to that of a 90 year old woman. With a risk of a broken hip or back if I fell, the idea was to treat the osteoporosis aggressively. Please, please do not take this medication or allow your loved ones to take it. If it is prescribed for you, do your research. I'm still in so much pain, even with pain medication, that I spend most of my day crying and often in bed and unable to even walk down a flight of stairs with confidence. I have no idea how long this will go on, but I do know I'd never have taken this if I'd had all the facts. This is unbearable. God bless. Stay safe and warm.
