Who are we?

Hello there folks! We are Arizmendi Emeryville, a worker-owned bakery cooperative here in Eville since 2003. Since that time we done our best to spread roots and grow with the community and it has been a joy!

What happened?

Back on December 11th, a car in the parking lot behind our bakery lost control and slammed into the back of our building, hitting our gas line and electrical closet. Thankfully no one was hurt, but a fire broke out, fueled by the gas causing a devastating fire that went on for over an hour.

As a cooperative, we’ve set out to reimagine what our Bakery could look for us and in what new ways could it be of service to our greater Emeryville community. We warmly embrace all the love and positive energy that our community has poured into our Bakery.

What is this for?

Our goals are twofold:

First we want to try to meet our mounting expenses, including paying our bakers through the shutdown, and do so without taking out loans. In the short term, donations would help with this.

Second, during this closure, we have a very rare opportunity to improve our bakery from the inside out. We should be clear we are going to reopen even without this as we are insured for the fire, but how we come back and with what vibrancy and ability to serve is dependent on this. We have also been excitedly planning on ways to improve the infrastructure of the bakery. How far we can raise ourselves from the bare minimum to a thriving, bustling and efficiently laid out bakery can be affected by you! This is the long term impact of donations.

Thanks to all the people who have reached out to us, and thank you for taking the time to read our story.
