Climate Run 2017: Arctic Trail

In August 2017, I plan to run the Arctic Trail, a 500-mile route that traverses remote mountainous terrain between Norway, Sweden, and Finland -- all above the Arctic Circle. I hope to set the FKT (Fastest Known Time) for completing a largely self-supported run on the trail while bearing witness to a rapidly changing climate in the region and its effects on local indigenous Sami communities and on mountain cultures and environments along the way.

I am raising money to support the planning, travel, equipment, and supplies needed for this extended 12 to 14-day wilderness run. The money I raise will be spent directly on airfare and other travel, on food, and on the specialized equipment I will need to help reach my goal to cover 40 miles each day.

Your donation helps to realize the principal goals of the Climate Run project:

To bear witness to changing ecologies and cultures in the face of a rapidly changing climate;
To cultivate conversation and build community around climate resilience;
To change the narrative about climate change from one of resistance to one of resilience.

This campaign seeks to match a Live Your Dream grant from the American Alpine Club to help make this run a reality! I am raising money to support the planning, travel, equipment, and supplies needed for this extended 12 to 14-day wilderness run. The money I raise will be spent directly on airfare and other travel, on food, and on the equipment I will need to help reach my goal to cover 40 miles each day.

As I prepare for next summer, I continue to build on the success of the 2015 Climate Run: Iceland , a 150-mile run south-to-north across Iceland. My goal was not only to complete the run but to share stories and images about building climate resilience in the outdoor community. As part of the 44-hour run, I also collected water samples for microplastics research with Adventure Scientists (which I will continue in 2017), and since the run, I've given presentations to hundreds of people across the U.S. and Europe about climate change, athletics, resilience, and vulnerability. I plan to continue outreach and to speak about these critical issues in the months leading up to the 2017 Arctic Run as well as upon its successful completion.

Climate Run has been recognized as an official award selection by SHIFT (Shaping How We Invest in Tomorrow; 2016), and as one of Vermont’s Top Ten Athletes [“The Climate (Game) Changer”] in 2015 . For my work with Climate Run, I have been featured in National Geographic Voice Blog, Vermont Sports Magazine, and other publications , and in March 2017, I will present at SXSWedu in Austin, Texas on the connections between ecology and education inspired by the Climate Run project.

The more people I have believing in this important cause -- one of the most important issues of our lifetime -- the greater the chance I’ll succeed. I plan to dedicate this run not only to the project goals but also to everyone who has helped and whose strength and energy I will lean on between now and when I finish the run in the small town of Kautokenio in far northern Norway.

Thank you so much for your support!
