ARCADIA NURSERY SCHOOL RENOVATION CAMPAIGN #CommunityProject
Hello Family and Friends.
2016, marks the 40th Anniversary of Arcadia Nursery School officially opened by Reverend Francis Markall S.J (Archbishop of Salisbury ”Harare”) on 3rd April 1976.
I am an ex-pupil from the year ’89 and invite all other prior scholars to please join the Infrastructure Development Campaign. The Nursery is in need of urgent support from philanthropists and members of the Community, locally and internationally including previous Students, Teachers, Employees, The Youth and Volunteers.
I created this Campaign as an attempt to raise awareness of the current challenges the School is experiencing. It is non-profit making and the moderate fees charged are the minimum necessary to cover day to day running costs.
Investment will upgrade the facilities/premises to create a pristine and safe environment for the little ones consequently an increase in more enrolments to help the School sustain itself long-term. Due to the economic hardships the Nation is facing and other factors the student numbers have dwindled therefore has resulted in unforeseen financial constraints. The Nursery has improvised and accepts children between 2-5 years to accommodate the fewer enrolments at grade zero (0), which is now also incorporated in Primary Schools Countrywide.
An early education of a child will give them a better start to life, alleviates illiteracy, enhances creativity, development of motor skills and instils self-confidence.
I voluntarily compiled the list of all pupils whom attended the Pre-School since its establishment approx. 1170+ names and a summary of their origin in order to restore their History for other generations.

A Social Worker, Mrs Rhoda Immerman from the School of Social Work, Salisbury (now Harare) was the founder of the Pre-School in January 1974 in conjunction with the Arcadia Community Committee. The ACC Chairman at the time was Mr G Raftopoulos whom was of paramount importance in facilitation of the Nursery.
It was initially situated in a small room at the Arcadia Community Centre Hall with no monetary funds, besides red/white tilling supplied and fitted by the Marley Tile Company. It is located between the Hall (now known as the Recreational Room) and the current School. Her dedication for setting up a room as an Educational System for Toddlers, enhanced her Campaign to another level. She soon received small financial benefits from The Nursery School Association (NSA) and Mashonaland Nursery School Teacher’s Association. Which resulted in 2 Small units built next to the Community Centre.
It took the Arcadia Community 25 years to finally see their project come to life. After a failed attempt of raising inadequate funds in 1959. On the 15th January 1974, the School opened with 14 pupils, 10 days later a total of 23. Mrs Immerman’s vision was a 3 Unit School with a capacity of 72 children. However, she still required a lump sum of investment.
In December 1974 Father Edward (Ted) Rogers, the Principal at the School of Social Work, wrote a petition for funds to the Misereor in Europe in order for the Nursery to build better Classrooms and facilities. The MISEREOR’s support is available to any human being in need, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or gender, and has being in action in Africa, Asia and Latin America since 1958.
Fr. Rogers, born in Britain, was the founding father of the SSW. It was set up at Morgan High School, Arcadia Salisbury in 1964. The Jesuit Clergyman introduced Social Work Education up to Tertiary Level at the University of Rhodesia (now called University of Zimbabwe) in 1975. He was the first Principal between 1964 and 1985.
The Pioneer for Social Development was awarded an honorary Doctorate from the UZ in 2002 for his contribution of services to the University and local Communities He is also responsible for the setup of Organisations: Aids Counselling Trust, Jesuits Aids Project (JAP) and Help Age Zimbabwe-(In junction with Christopher Beer. The first board of HAZ included Cephas Msipa, Enock Dumbuchena, Father Rogers (Chairperson), Rhoda Immerman (Secretary to the Board) and Canaan Dube. A project that begun in a garage at 37 Hillside Road, Harare). Father Rogers has now retired at Corpus Christi Jesuit Community in Bournemouth, Dorset.
Father E.W Rogers received positive feedback in March 1975 and the Misereor granted them a substantial amount of financial aid to kick start their building campaign. Fr. Rogers and Sr. Dymphna VanWesenbeeck were both responsible for addressing the plight of the necessary funds needed for the Development of 2 spacious well-lit Classrooms designed by Mr. Graham Mills, an Architect.
Immerman’s dream became a reality! The Educational Institution officially opened on 3rd April 1976, by the Archbishop of Salisbury, Father Francis Markall. Born in Harringay, Britain on the 24th September 1905, ordained as a Jesuit Priest in 1937 and appointed Archbishop in Rhodesia from 29 April 1956 to 31 May 1976. The School was famously recognisable by its eye-catching “Clown” Logo on display outside the premises.
The Misereor grant, and donations from other benefactors, accelerated the installation of wash-basins, toilets and sanitary pipework. Mr Andrews and Mr Raftopoulous assisted in the Carpentry and creation of a Sandpit. Mr L Brener (Salisbury Pharmacy) donated a First Aid Kit. Mrs Jampies: Aprons and Table Cloths. The Child Protection Society: donated a cupboard, toys, books, crayons and sweets. Mrs Negin donated a Jungle Jim. The Hebrew Nursery School donated Stretchers and a Chalkboard. Mr and Mrs Shaw donated Play Equipment. Mrs Pentreath/Mrs Hanan and Mr and Mrs Anderson donated Toys and Books. Mrs Clain donated play equipment and a doll’s house. Monetary donations were received from Anglo American Corporation South Africa, H.M Barbour, The Rhodesian Milling Co Ltd, Mr Lemming and Mr Stoddard – 1959 fundraiser, Rothmans of Pall Mall, Lion Match Co Ltd, M G.T Thornicroft, Turner Asbestos Products, Johnson and Fletcher, Helvey Knitwear and Mr M Jampies. Mrs Blumeris, Mr Webb and Miss S Bardolia assisted in collection of the donations in the absence of Mrs Immerman.
The Pre-School soon had a capacity for 46-48 toddlers aged 3-5 years of age. The first Principal was Mrs Lola Kaplan, a qualified Psychologist. The first teachers were Mrs Connie Searl (taught 5 year olds), Mrs. Bigweather (taught 4 year olds) and Mrs. Brown (taught 3 year olds). The singing/musical instructor was Mrs Lina Kantor and Mrs Ammelia Musonza was the general worker. These and many more philanthropists were responsible for the initial set up of the successful Community Project, between 1973 and 1976.
List of appointed Headmistresses/Principals after Mrs Kaplan, were Mrs Bent, Mrs Fredericks, Mrs Plant, Mrs Willis, Mrs Abdul, Mrs Daniels and currently is Ms Cross (Qualified ECD/ACE Teacher).
Mrs. Immerman’s vision raises awareness of the importance of Early Child Development for long term benefits, so in the future children from all backgrounds would attend and therefore have less non-achievers at a young age from High School or Tertiary Education, consequently getting better job opportunities in their Adulthood.
