Ara Jo Memorial Fund
$26,563 of $20,000 goal
Funds raised on this campaign will be given to family and used for honoring her memory through the memorial we will be having in Oakland and the funeral in LA. Any additional funds will be given to her parents to help ease any financial burden brought on by this horrible tragedy.
Thank you so much for the unfathomable kindness, generosity and support that you have given our family over the past several months. As we heard countless stories of how Ara has touched each and every one of your lives, we can understand the overwhelming sacrifice that each of you have made to help raise these funds. We believe that it is all in Ara's honor and it is a true reflection of the unwavering kindness and openness that she bestowed on each of us. Like Ara, we know that many of you are artists and community builders and have put your artistic talents and energy in tattooing, hairstyling, drawing, cooking/baking, singing, etc to help raise these funds. We are truly grateful for your generosity and sacrifice.
As we bring this fundraising portal to a close, we would like to share with you that the funds have been partially dedicated to recover funeral costs. The remaining funds, combined with other private funds donated to the family, will be dedicated to a "Ara Jo Memorial Fund" whereby we will make donation(s) to arts organization(s) in the Bay Area that: 1). share Ara's interest in alternative art and youth projects/programs, and 2). commit to honor Ara's legacy. We are still in the research and vetting phase of partnering with the right organization(s) and hope to share more concrete information in the coming months.
We think about Ara everyday as many of you do as well. If you would like to stay in touch, please email us at arajomemories at gmail dot com.
Grace Kim (Ara's cousin and representing the Jo Family)
Our daughter Anastasia Rodrigues was very close friends with Ara and we would like to help sustain her memory. We are renovating a small cottage in the redwoods of West Sonoma County that we will eventually offer as a vacation rental and writer's getaway. We plan to offer a writing residency for young artists and writers as part of our project. We are still developing the idea but our intention is to remember Ara with the periodic Ara Jo Memorial Residency at the Crow's Nest, we hope, by the end of 2017. As creators ourselves (I'm a writer and my husband is a former DJ), we want to support struggling creators who need the time and space to work on their art. Find me on Facebook to keep up on the project.
Click on the updates above, Julia: "Hello everyone, just wanted to let you know that Grace Kim, Ara's Cousin is responsible for withdrawing the funds from this donation fundraiser. She is family and is with Ara's parents and is personally delivering funds to them. Thank you for your support and we are ensuring that every penny is going to be controlled by her parents. "
Tina - have you been in direct contact with the family and gotten permission? I learned of issues with Kiyomi's fund because no one talked to them first and they're not actually accepting donations, which created a lot of confusion and hostility.
