Pablo Ortiz is an 11 year old boy who woke up one day in November 2016 with excruciating pain in his thighs. His parents brought him to the ER at Glen Cove Hospital and by the time he arrived, he was unable to walk. At first the doctors suspected dehydration as Pablo had recently been sick and had been vomiting, but after running tests, they ruled it out. They sent Pablo home with more questions than answers, and thus begun 5 months of frustration for his parents, Cindy & Julio, as they searched for the cause of this sudden illness. They brought him to Cohen Children's Hospital, but after a clear MRI, he was released with a walker and a prescription for physical therapy. The physical therapist could not believe that a child in his condition was released and recommended for therapy, and he was referred to Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NY for further observation. It seemed that there might finally be a light at the end of the tunnel as a team of neurologists admitted him for more tests including more blood work and a spinal tap. However, these tests yielded no firm diagnosis, and once again, Pablo was sent home with no answers. Cindy and Julio have tried everything - holistic treatment in Puerto Rico, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, and while the latter does provide some relief to Pablo, it's temporary and he always regresses.
The next step for Pablo is see specialists at either the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) or Boston Children's Hospital. Since the Ortiz's insurance does not cover treatment at either of these hospitals, they would have to pay out of pocket for treatment. Without knowing how long Pablo would be in the hospital for, or what sort of treatment and expenses are ahead of them, we are appealing to friends and family to help get Pablo the care he needs. The worst thing any parent can go through is to see their child suffer and to be unable to help get them better. There is an answer for Pablo, and with your help and generosity, we can get it.
