Annika's Selective Mutism Intensive
Annika is my sister-in-law and she has Selective Mutism. Selective Mutism is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a child's inability to speak and communicate effectively in select social settings, such as school. These children are able to speak and communicate in settings where they are comfortable, secure, and relaxed. I have only ever heard her speak once, and it was less than four words and barely audible. She has come across the opportunity to attend an intensive therapy workshop in New York City for two weeks. What a wonderful blessing!
Unfortunately, the cost of attending this therapy is daunting, and threatens the financial security of the entire family. This a once in a lifetime opportunity for her, though, giving her the tools she will need to be a independent, confident, and happy. When she turns 18, which is in the next few months, she will no longer be eligible for the treatment. The program is September 25 through October 6.
The cost of the therapy alone is around $25,000, not including the cost of travel, food, and lodging. I think as a community, if we can all give a small amount, we can do great things.
