We are in crisis.

We are being forced to leave our current shelter.

We need to secure a new premises as soon as possible as time is running out.

Moving forward our long term security will depend on us being able to purchase our own property.
This is why we are desperately appealing to you generosity.
Please dig deep.

We'll soon be homeless, just like our animals, as time in our current home is nearly up.  This is a crisis for us, can you help? A lot of lives are depending on us as we rescue and re-home several hundred animals every year. Without a suitable premises this will have a dramatic impact on our ability to help as many animals and so we are launching a major fundraising drive to make sure this doesn't happen.
A new premises will be needed in a matter of months and this time we want to buy to ensure the future rescue of many, many animals in need.
Everyone here is a volunteer and we are a non-profit registered charity so every cent raised goes to the animals and none to the humans.  We've been at this work since 1940 so we know what we're doing and want to keep going forever.
We rescue animals from cruelty or abandonment and give them all a fresh start in a loving home.

The Big Plan
We've set our target for the realistic sum needed to either buy or build a fit-for-purpose Animal Shelter.  We know it seems a HUGE amount to ask for but all of us here are determined to give this project 100% effort.  We are also putting out a plea for anyone who might assist us with their unpaid skills eg.  Public Relation, Planners, Builders Carpentry, supplies.

We do all this for the animals and not for ourselves so we thank you in advance on behalf of all those whose lives will either be saved or improved by your generosity.

With heartfelt gratitude,
all at K.W.W.S.P.C.A.

Apologies for not updating everyone until now but we have been waiting to see whether our planning application had been accepted.

The Planning Department of Kildare County Council has refused the KWWSPCA’s application for retention of the present Shelter; the only reason given being the restricted sightlines at our entrance. As anyone who has been to the Shelter knows, the sightlines as you leave to the left are good, but to the right they are restricted by our neighbour’s field hedge, more so in the summer as this hedge is not regularly clipped as it used to be. Our neighbour on this side is the person who has objected to us from the beginning.

This decision by Kildare County Council to refuse our application is being appealed to An Bord Pleanala. We believe it is in the power of the County Council to require this hedge to be cut or removed, in the interests of public safety. We have asked for retention of the Shelter at the present site for another two years. Two years would give us time to find a new site, obtain planning permission and build a shelter or convert any buildings that might already be on the new site.
Our landlord is trying to avoid selling the property but in the long run, it is likely to be sold. The price of the property is beyond our means to purchase. Our lease states that we must be given 6 months’ notice to quit, so, even if the property is sold, we would have this time to arrange to move out.

We are seriously looking for a suitable site for a new Shelter; ideally we would like land to be donated to us but we are in a position to buy land. We feel that in the long run the best solution to our situation is to build a new Shelter or adapt an existing property where we can get full planning permission and where we will own the property rather than leasing it. We only need about 2 - 3 acres of land, so long as it is in an area where dogs can be walked, where horses can be cared for in the short term, where there is reasonable road access and where there are no close neighbours.

The fund raising is still going well and since the Shelter Appeal Fund started at the end of January, over €120,000 has been raised through donations and fund raising events. We have set a target of €300,000 so there is still a long way to go, but we believe that once we get land and have plans for a new Shelter, we can boost our fund raising activities considerably, getting local businesses more involved. We need more fund raising events to be organised over the next few months. If anyone can think of ways of raising funds, please let us know.

Our present Shelter continues to operate well with the help of all our volunteers and we will stay there for as long as we can. We will keep on taking in dogs which are welfare cases as well as taking in most of the dogs in the Kildare Dog Pound. Already this year the KWWSPCA has rehomed more than 125 dogs and puppies, of which almost half have been rescued from the Kildare Dog Pound.

Our Community Cat Care Group has also been very busy this year, having trapped, neutered and returned more than 200 community (feral) cats and rehomed almost 110 cats and kittens so far this year. They have another 35 in their care at the moment, waiting for homes. All our cats are cared for in foster homes.

Many of you will have seen the RTE investigates programme , or heard the recent debates about the Greyhound industry. It was made clear that the industry gets over €16million of taxpayers money. We are currently trying to fundraise so that we can build an animal shelter in order to continue with the rescue work that we do. Many of our rescued animals are lurchers and greyhounds. Despite the fact that €16million can be given to support the Greyhound industry, we , as one of the rescues who picks up the pieces, gets only €25,000 from the department of Agriculture, every other cent comes from fundraisers (and none of this goes to our volunteers as we are all unpaid). Our gofundme has only €32,000 so far, and in total through fundraising we have about €100,000. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. But we are only a fraction of the way towards what we need and urgently urgently need much much more. Please please help if you can. And please lobby all of our local council representatives and politicians to seek funding or land for the Kwwspca, and to help put a stop to the support for the greyhound industry/look for legislation to control the breeding of pups and the ‘disposal ‘ of unwanted greyhounds.
