Dog Play Yard with Sensory Garden

Play Yard with Sensory Garden FlipBook
The dogs in our adoption program are in transition- having recently experienced homelessness and constantly facing the difficulties of not having a forever home. For the past several months, we have been brainstorming about ways to allow the dogs to feel safer and less stressed while in our care.

Through our research, we have come up with a concept that will intertwine and meet these goals while at the same time provide an opportunity to exercise and socialize with other dogs - a Sensory Garden and Dog Play Yard.

What is a sensory garden?  It is a highly interactive area where dogs can sniff, chew, scratch, feel and play all in one environment. Behavioral studies have shown that sensory gardens reduce stress because they are a great way for dogs to be mentally stimulated by various sounds, smells, and textures. Plants such as Rosemary, Wheatgrass and Lavender, which are dog-friendly and have strong individual scents that will be used to make the area more interesting for sniffing. Different materials including rocks, mulch, logs, and stumps will allow the dogs to explore various textures.  Landscaping including a water feature will provide different natural sounds for the dogs to experience.

In addition to the sensory garden, the play yard will encourage the dogs in our care to run, fetch, play and just enjoy being outside. The dogs will have the ability to exercise off-leash in a safe environment. This will contribute to their overall well-being in significant ways.

The Sensory Garden and Dog Play Yard construction will cost $20,000.  We are asking for your generous donations to make this idea possible. Here are some examples of what your donations will provide for the dogs in our Adoption Program:

$50 will provide 10 plants
$100 will provide 5 trees
$250 will provide a park bench
$500 will provide the bone shaped splash pool
$1,000 will provide the tunnels
$1,500 will provide the boulders and water feature
$5,000 will provide the landscaping materials
$10,000 will provide the fence

With your help, we can create this amazing place of enrichment to help dogs be happier, calmer and better-behaved while they wait for their forever homes.
