While on a class trip to Puerto Rico, The Burlington School high school senior and class president Andrew Hartle dove into the ocean and hit his head on a rock. Andrew was injured at c3 c4 c5. He had no feeling or movement from the chest down.  He underwent 12 hours of surgery Thursday 9/27/18. Surgeons removed vertebrae fragments from c4 c5 c6 and stabilized. He regained some feeling and motion in his arms but nothing below the waist.

We need urgent and significant financial help for the Hartle family so they can give Andrew every possible opportunity for recovery.

Andrew is a genuinely kind, humble, smart, handsome and extremely talented young man. He is a successful competitive swimmer and a gifted drummer and musician. He has great prospects for college.  Ask anyone....teacher, student or friend and everyone loves him and speaks highly of him. His sense of humor and quick whit always draws people in. Andrew’s positive attitude and beautiful smile combined with his joyful kindness are things we pray will serve him well thru the upcoming months.

The days ahead will be an unbearable time for Andrew, his parents and his little brother and sister. They are a good, honest, hardworking, faith filled family who need God’s merciful hand and favor. We deeply appreciate any financial gift and assure everyone that every penny goes to Andrew’s recovery.  The Andrew Elliott Hartle Irrevocable Trust has been established and is being managed by Robert Rose, Trustee.

Andrew’s dad has been updating on Facebook each day. His name is Jeremy Hartle and his mom is Amy Hartle.33360104_1538260889754069_r.jpeg33360104_1538260935806517_r.jpeg33360104_1538260974623384_r.jpeg33360104_1538261093661975_r.jpeg

Today is Andrew Hartle’s 3 month injury anniversary. So many changes in his life over the past 90 days. Tomorrow we will discharge from inpatient and start outpatient therapy on Friday. Jeremy Hartle, Andrew, Nathan, Gracie and I will all sleep under the same roof for the first time in 90 days. Can’t wait to cook dinner, talk, play games and tuck everyone in. Pray for our next 30-60 days of growth before returning to Btown.

Day 30 at The Shepherd Center! Jeremy Hartle and I moved into our apartment today. It’s about 4,500 steps, one way.

Andrew Hartle spent last night in ICU for a good reason, he is Ventilator FREE! Changed him to a new trach, now he is able to wear his speaking valve 24/7, except when he is asleep. He is on a regular diet, NO more tube feeding, hopefully the tube comes out soon!

Medical issues are starting to fade, still having night fevers, neck pain and occasional fatigue. Need to consider a bladder program that will work best for him. Continued awareness, life long, for Autonomic Dysreflexia, high blood pressure due to an unknown cause. This happens when your autonomic nervous system -- which controls things like breathing and digestion that you do without thinking -- overreacts to something below the damaged spinal cord. It’s sometimes called hyperreflexia. More than half of people with a spinal cord injury in the upper back get it. It is VERY important but not widely known in some hospitals. We had a scare last week when his bladder wasn’t emptying as it should but since we are in a specialized spinal cord injury hospital it was addressed immediately. It will have to be an awareness Andrew will carry with him, lifelong.

As most of you know Andrew has paralysis in his upper and lower body. He works hard everyday to regain as much strength as he can. As some muscular and sensory strength is regained, if you read about C5 and C6 injury, fine motor skills are much more difficult to regain. The anatomy of the spinal cord and what level controls which function is tedious to understand. He is much healthier than he has been but much hard work is ahead of us. This is not a 12-16 week rehabilitation, it is life long. Andrew will achieve skills long after I am gone and will be an inspiration to many, everyday!

Andrew has loved having his dad here this week! I hope I can fill his shoes. Sounds like they had a lot of fun!

As we continue to support Andrew we appreciate all of the support from all of you! We get correspondence from family, friends, acquaintances and strangers daily. Those kind words and jesters keep us moving forward with one word on our lips HOPE. It is my new favorite word! HOPE for a slight change and improvement each day. This injury has a slow progression. HOPE strengthens our faith that Andrew will improve!
