Miss World Canada, Anastasia Lin

Hello Everyone,

My name is Anastasia Lin, and next month I will be representing Canada at the Miss World competition in Washington DC. But I need your help to get there.

Since being crowned Miss World Canada, I have used this beauty pageant platform to bring attention to some of the worst human rights abuses in the world today—particularly in China, the country of my birth.

I am truly honoured to have this chance to be a voice for the voiceless. It's been a humbling experience over the last year to  have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and on CNN and BBC News . I’ve testified before U.S. Congress and European Parliament, spoken at UN in Geneva , and presented at the Oslo and San Francisco Freedom Forums .

Because of my human rights advocacy, my father in China was threatened by security agents in an attempt to silence me. The Chinese government declared me a persona non grata and I was barred from entering the country for the  Miss World Finals last year. Fortunately, the Miss World Organization has given me a second chance to compete in the Finals this year.

Speaking about freedom of speech and freedom of belief has become my full-time job. There’s just one problem: advocating for human rights is not exactly lucrative. All of my speaking engagements in support of human rights to date are unpaid, and I often have to cover my own airfare and accommodations. To help cover these costs, I have had to sell my car and rely on the generosity of my family and friends.

As the Miss World Finals pageant approaches, the expenses are piling up. Miss World Canada is currently going through a transition of license holder, therefore I am responsible for my own competition.  I am expected to pay for my own training, evening gowns, photography sessions, production costs for videos, promotional costs, airfare, hair and makeup, among other things.  It's the real world out there. This is why I am asking for your support.

I realize that to many people, supporting a beauty pageant contestant may seem frivolous. But this platform has genuinely enabled me to speak out about issues of immense importance. In particular, my efforts to bring attention to forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience including Falun Gong practitioners, Tibetans, Uyghurs and other vulnerable groups has increased the visibility of this issue.

I hope to use this chance to bring the message of freedom that we all care about to the world stage, and it would be my great privilege to have your support.
