The detection and processing of sound is vital to the development of a child’s mental and speech capacities. Most of us don’t realize it, but without hearing, a child is at a major disadvantage in their development and growth.
For this reason, it was devastating to the family of two-year-old Anabella Rivera when they discovered that she was born with major hearing loss. Leonardo and Carolina, Anabella’s parents, learned that their daughter was not hearing fully through small discoveries during the first years of her life. They would applaud her and garner no response. An object would fall and create a large noise as she played, but she would not react. Her mother would call her name from across the room, and her head would not turn. They realized that this was a pattern for her and sought medical help. What they learned was heartbreaking.
Their daughter, who is a vibrant personality adored by all of her family in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, is one of the 32 million children worldwide who are born with severe hearing loss[1]. For most of these children, their hearing loss is not detected until they are over the age of two-and-a-half, severely impacting their speech development[2]. Anabella is among those who had early detection of the problem, and her family now knows that the only treatment that will allow her to develop her speech completely and live a life unhindered by her hearing loss is if she receives a cochlear implant. Her hearing loss is so severe that a normal hearing aid provides only minimal help, and cochlear implants have been proven to allow a child to develop speech and motor skills at a similar rate to children born without this problem when they are performed at a young age[2].
For Anabella and her family, raising the funds for her to receive the implant as soon as possible is the only option. Without it, she will be at a major disadvantage in her growth and development, and those who love her may not ever experience the full vibrancy of her personality. The family already has a trusted doctor who knows Anabella well who will perform the surgery.
