THE EXTRAORINARY STORY

Re: Ruthann Tucker and lisaj lander

My name is Ingrid Kuran and I live in Toronto with my partner and our 5 yr. old.  I have known Ruthann and lisaj for over 20 years while I was living in BC and then in Toronto.  I am aware of their employment history and successes in Toronto and what I saw when I visited them was far from that.

I visited with Ruthann and lisaj in Sooke, BC to find them struggling on so many levels that I am unsure of where to begin.  I began by writing to a small group of people after I agreed to help realized that I could not do all that is necessary on my own.  I started with a list of 11 people and have found that this network was too small to accomplish this Extraordinary Plan.

This couple lost jobs and then their home 2 years ago & spent the next 6 months 'couch surfing' - staying with different people until they moved to Sooke over a year ago. Both have been unable to find work.  THE MAIN ISSUE IS THE LACK OF A FAMILY DR. TO HELP THEM WITH ONGOING ISSUES.

HEALTH/MEANTAL HEALTH: There are struggles with needing a new knee (& the pain/lack of mobility that comes with that), diabetes (swollen ankles/feet, pain & open sores on her legs) & high blood pressure (lack of medication for all these issues) and related mental health issues. As you may imagine there is also mental health issues & lack of medication to address this.  Lack of medication to manage these illnesses has made everything worse.

BEHIND ALL OF THIS: It was the taking care of Ruthann’s mom (who had Alzheimer’s) for all those years, that led to all this - it was too much and they have been struggling since that time.

IN SUMMARY: Ruthann and lisaj are in a crisis and need your financial and practical support with getting them back to Toronto.  They are jobless, on social assistance and paying a rental amount that leaves them $30/mo. for ALL other expenses.  They are struggling with poverty, nutrition and health and mental health issues.  They have not had family medical care and are struggling with pain and lack of medication to treat multiple diagnoses. As you may be aware, this level of vulnerability comes challenges in looking for asking for help so I have offered to prepare an extraordinary plan to match these extraordinary people.

THE EXTRAORDINARY PLAN:

GETTING HERE:
MOVING: Estimated costs                                          $3000-$4000
AIRFARE: 2 one-way tickets from Vitoria to Toronto + 1 dog $2000
TAXI: Sooke BC to Victoria Airport                                          $100
TAXI or a RIDE: Toronto Airport to NEW HOME                      $60

A PLACE TO LAND AND LIVE
This may be the hardest part of the plan.  Ruthann, lisaj and Betty the bulldog will need a place to live.  I am hoping that Woodgreen Housing may be able to facilitate/create and support temporary and/or preferably permanent subsidized accommodation.

MEDICAL CARE:
OHIP: has expired.  They will need to establish 3 months of living in ON before getting on OHIP again.  During the 3 months while they establish residency for OHIP – any care will be recipricolly  billed to BC Health.

Ruthann and lisaj are looking forward to returning to the care of their former family Dr. If there is any way you can assist with rides to help them get the urgent care that they need, please advise.

STARTING OUT:
It would be great to create basketful of basics including food, cleaning supplies and pet food.  It would also be great to offer food cards, gift cards and taxi cards to support the early days of their return.

FURNITURE:
Minimally Ruthann and lisaj will need a bed, some comfy chairs/couch and a dining table + chairs. Donations welcome however please prepare to hold onto the items for 2-3 more weeks until they arrive.

JOBS:
If you are aware of any jobs that might suit either Ruthann or lisaj - please let me know and I will forward postings to them so that that they can apply.

FOOD/BILLS:
If anyone on this list is able to provide for a buffer financially to assist with back-dated bills for storage and utilities as well as food resources now and during and leading up to the move during the first week of February. $1000 - $2000

THE DOG – BETTY: She also needs medication that is expensive - she has a bladder infection, ear infections & her skin is a mess.  $500

TOTAL BUDGET:
I am thinking that approx. $7500 - $10000 will be needed to get this couple back to Toronto. Another $8000-$10000 will be needed to furnish a 1-bedroom unit.

Please let me know how you might be able to assist and if there is any part of this plan that you can commit to assisting with.  I will coordinate ensuring that Ruthann and lisaj are kept informed of the progress.
