About the Hatteras Island Ocean Center:
The Hatteras Island Ocean Center is a non-profit organization that teaches the value of the environment in the OBX. We offer many fun and educational nature programs to help educate visitors of the Island on the surrounding area.

What we're trying to accomplish with this GoFundMe:
The HIOC would like to pay for and install amber lighting on all beach front houses in Hatteras, Avon, and anywhere else that will allow it in the OBX. This amber lighting is used to protect sea turtles from wandering away from the ocean when they hatch. When a sea turtle hatches, they follow the reflection of the moonlight on the water to find their way to the ocean. At times, artificial lighting can make them head the opposite direction, causing them to not make it out of the beach. As of right now, only one out of every sea turtle born in a nest makes it to adulthood. We hope that with this amber lighting, we can prevent baby sea turtles from heading away from the ocean, and reducing their fatality rate.
