Hi, my name is Candy Malaspino. My smart, talented and beautiful 7 year old cousin Amani is battling a very rare form of cancer called Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumor of the Ovaries. She was diagnosed in November, 2015.
This is Amani before starting treatment.
In February, tests showed the tumor had spread into her blood, she then required surgery to remove one of her ovaries.
After surgery, doctors started her on a grueling 12 week chemotherapy regimen, during which she'll be in the hospital every two weeks, for two to three days at a time. She has since completed her first round, and it left her very sick, throwing up every day, and resulted in her losing most of her hair.
Sadly, she no longer likes having her picture taken.
Amani was scheduled to start her second round of Chemo yesterday, but her blood levels were too low. Doctors have advised waiting an additional week in order to give her body more time to recover.
Amani's mom, my cousin Jaime, is a single mom, struggling to make ends meet while caring for three small children. Given how much time she commits to caring for Amani, with the countless medical appointments, numerous hospital stays, and days spent at home with Amani when she is too sick to attend school, she's finding it increasingly more difficult with each passing day to work enough hours necessary to properly provide for her family under these tragic circumstances.
Not only must Amani endure this horrible disease, but also the cruel ridicule by her peers at school because of her hair loss. Because of this, her mom has applied for a tutor so she can be schooled at home. This would make it even more difficult for her to work.
Helping Amani's mom cover her basic living expenses so she can focus on Amani's care and recovery, while still providing a stable and quality life for her family, would be an incredible relief and immensely appreciated.
Please help this aspiring young artist, who is so full of life and personality, and her family, through this very difficult time.
