Help the Alvarados start over

Donation protected

I wrote an essay a week ago when Harvey first hit describing what was happening to my family. I will post updates accordingly.

My name is Nicole Alvarado. I am a native Houstonian, born and raised. My family (father, mother and little brother) lived in the Ashford Forest neighborhood off Memorial and Dairy Ashford.

Basically: Hurricane Harvey took everything away from my family. All their cars. The home they spent decades saving for and turning into their very own, not to mention everything inside it. As I write this, they can't even begin to go back and start the process of moving on because the house is filled with 6-7 feet of water. It will be weeks before they can even access their neighborhood again, and to what purpose - the water completely covers our house. There's no way there will be anything left to save anyway.

So many lost so much, but I am asking you to please help my family get back on their feet. They went from a 2,700-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 3.5 bath home in a nice neighborhood to a 680-square-foot, 1-bedroom apartment off the freeway. They are sleeping on the air mattresses they had to drag through dirty floodwaters with my 10-year-old brother on top. They have no furniture, no possessions, nothing. My brother is sleeping in a hall closet.

To see my hard-working parents reduced to this devastates me. They are not ones to ask for help, even when they most need it. So I'm doing it for them.

More than things, they simply need the funds to start over. Even once FEMA gives them anything (which, by the way, they can't even begin the process until someone can assess the damage, which--if you recall--is physically impossible for another few weeks until the water recedes), the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives, not to mention day-to-day expenses, is daunting.

Insurance doesn't cover their current living costs. If you could help them just pay rent for the next couple of months (which, as you can imagine, is ridiculously high for what they're getting given the increased demand for lodgings in the area) - any amount would help.

I can't tell you how much your support in our time of need is appreciated. This is hard for everyone. But at least we're in this together.

Thank you all so much.
