Al loved words. He had stacks of books with highlighted passages, notes and reactions to what he read. He was a writer, a musician, a friend. He was a brother and a son. He was so much more than words can contain. On Monday, he became more than what our simple world could contain, but, oh how he loved it.
The past few days have been filled with memories of his love for being outside; for exploring and spending time with the people he loved. He found beauty in the rain, often going for walks when others would go in. His photography carries the way he saw beauty in things we often take for granted. He didn't take things for granted - it was almost superhuman how idealistic he could be; sometimes even infuriating. Al wanted to help everyone; to live in a world as an active participant and he was not afraid to stand up for what and whom he believed in.
We were supposed to bring in the New Year together. It was supposed to be one of the few times a year our family was complete. Al didn't like "supposed to's."
He has so many people that love him and will miss him. We miss him, but, perhaps a better way to say it is that he's missing from us. There's a big hole in my heart that I'll wait to fill when I can hold him again. Our family is now tasked with his send-off. Amidst the sea of decisions that need to be made for him, we remember who he was and only hope we can represent him in a way deserving of his memory. We can't, but we will try.
All funds we raise will go toward Al's service, settling his accounts, and bringing him home. We thank you for any help you can offer during this time, and, more importantly, we thank you for your love. As you send us your love, prayers, energy or vibes, know that we're returning every sentiment.
