Stem Cell Transplant for Alexa
I am starting this GoFundMe to help my angel, Alexa Kay, receive a Stem Cell Transplant for Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS).
Our Past with MS
When Alexa was diagnosed with MS in 2013, at the age of 16, I honestly didn't know what the future looked like. I was scared for my little girl and wanted to help her in any way I could. Would my daughter be able to walk, see, and live a long healthy life? I didn’t know the answers to those questions. Initially, Alexa's diagnosis was Relapse Remitting MS. Alexa was placed on an injectable medication, which I administered 3 times a week. This medication caused Alexa's immune system to be constantly compromised. While Alexa was on her first line of therapy, she was hospitalized once and received IV steroids twice, this medication was ineffective. Alexa switched medications around her 18th birthday. Unfortunately, the second medication, an oral agent, did not keep her MS under control. Alexa had a pretty severe relapse, requiring another round of IV steroids just before starting her first year of college. Alexa then started her third drug to manage this very aggressive disease. That drug was also an oral agent and had a host of terrible side effects. Currently, Alexa has stopped all medications. In order to undergo the stem cell transplant, a 60 day wash out period is required. Alexa is receiving steroid infusions to keep things under control until we can make this necessary and life changing trip to Chicago.
It is our prayer that this Stem Cell Transplant will put Alexa's (rapidly progressing) MS into remission as it has done for many people all over the world.
Alexa is determined. She is a fighter. Never once has she had a pity party for herself. She works hard in school, gets good grades and is kind to others. She has tried to be as normal of a 19 year old as possible. Alexa holds her head up high. She is faithful to our Lord and trusts that all will be ok. She excels in everything she does...and always has. There are no excuses for this young lady. I am confident that after this treatment she will be able to follow her dreams of obtaining her college degree in Nutrition and live a full and abundant life.
Unfortunately, I have fought with my insuance company and this treament has been deemed "investigational". Coverage is denied. Despite that challenge, I must find a way to provide this medical treatment for my daughter.
It is our strong desire to begin the treatment sometime in July. So, this fundraising campaign is an urgent request for your help.
Please know that the thought of raising this kind of money is difficult for me to wrap my head around and asking for help is not something I do with ease.
I have done my best to provide the treatment that Alexa needs to fight this disease. I have accessed money from my 401K, cashed out stocks, and borrowed from family. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough. I must ask for help.
Caring for others and bringing them back to health is what drives me every day in my profession. Today, I am asking you to help me do that for my daughter. I will be forever grateful for every dollar raised through this campaign. I will also be grateful for how a community came together to help my angel Alexa.
If you are unable to help financially, I understand. I would ask that you consider sharing this GoFundMe with others in your circle that may have the resources to help us. I know together we can do this.
I will use this site to update everyone on our journey. I ask for your continued prayers and appreciate all the support I receive. May God bless you.

Alexa is doing remarkably well. Thank you for changing her life!
I am sitting at a Starbucks in Las Vegas with tears streaming down my face. Alexa is in Chicago for her 6 mos follow up visit (post stem cell transplant). I was just informed by our sweet, strong, amazing Alexa that her MRI's showed NO NEW LESIONS and that there are signs of healing of her old lesions. The doctor is absolutely amazed at the findings.
I want you all to know that our family is forever grateful for this miracle you all have provided. Your prayers, donations, and ongoing support have changed Alexa's life.
Alexa continues to gain strength everyday. Walking longer distances and leads a very normal life. It is a blessing beyond words.
I am sending each one of you a great big hug!
God bless you all.
Alexa is now 77 days post Stem Cell transplant.
She is doing extremely well. Alexa is exercising 5 days a week for about an hour. She has worked her way up to 2 miles on a stationary bike and is helping her body to get stronger by lifting free weights and doing some core training at a local gym.
Alexa has also resumed work at Steljes Cardiology. She is assisting with medical records and is putting in about 15-18 hrs a week. The money she is earning will be used for upcoming college expenses.
Alexa will be going back to University of Nevada Reno on December 2nd. She is so excited to get back to her studies.
I continue to share Alexa's story with so many people. It is so inspiring!
Please feel free to follow Alexa's Blog at the link provided below. Also, we prepared a little video of our journey... The link is also provided.

This will be the last update provided thru GoFundMe. Thank you again for your prayers and support. We continue to be blessed daily.
We are staying in Chicago for a couple days just to make sure we are close to the hospital if any needs arise for medical attention.
We are grateful for our Medtronic family - Jan & John Kuklenski who have opened up their home to us. Their house is very close to the hospital. They insisted we stay here versus staying in a hotel. We couldn't be more comfortable...
Alexa and I got a much needed good night of sleep last night. No nurses coming in for vitals or medications- just pure quiet sleep! Zzzzzz
Alexa will fly home to Las Vegas tmrw night. I will be driving her car home over the next three days with my fiancé Keith
Right now Alexa's immune system is pretty weak- so Alexa will need to be cautious when in public. If you see her- she won't be able to hug you- but know that she is happy to see you :)
I am still in awe ... All the love and support we continue to receive is so amazing. Alexa and I have never felt alone during this journey- we knew that we had an army behind us. I will never forget this kind of kindness and will continue to pay it forward.
We are on the road to recovery!
God bless you all!
I wish i could have given more but i am going to be having surgery myself in a week. I wish you all the best and stay positive. All the love and support i received during my strugle and on going strugle with cancer has made a huge difference. Stay strong and i will keep you in my thoughts
Eileen and Alexa Kay (my namesake) - First of all, I love you both so much and my heart breaks for the pain this disease has caused you, especially Alexa who has had a bit of her freedom and ability to live her young life taken away. I know Alexa has done hours and hours of research on possible treatments and I am more confident than ever before that this is the treatment that will work to heal her. The power of prayer is amazing and it is evident by all who love and support you here. Keep up hope that the answer to your prayers is coming...I just feel it. Hugs from Minnesota - Pamela Kay Azure
I'm in such awe....
This is an awesome story and it is amazing how a company can come together to help out one of their own. Thanks for the updates and myself and my family are praying that everything continues to remain positive. I could only pray to have an experience like this if the need arises in my family. Stay strong and good bless! I
I'm very happy to see the progress upwards for all of you. May God continue to bless your daughter with a future filled with good health.
Thank you so very much for the updates. I'm certain your daughter will one day be free of this illness, stay strong!
Yes Yes Yes I want a bracelet! Just sent you and Keith on email update of ministry of the father of the young boy I shared with you about raising money here also. He has a church on the strip.
It is truly an honor to work for a company that employs such generous and supportive people--I am amazed at what a difference 24 hours can make. Best of luck as you continue the next phase of your journey--I will anxiously await an update to hear your progress. God bless you and your family!
