People with albinism are facing unprecedented wave of violence across Africa. In some parts of the continent, there are cultural beliefs that body parts harvested from albinos can be used to make charms for “good luck” and demand for albino body parts has risen to all time high. This has resulted in a wave of violence and physical aggression against albinos. Some have been amputated alive, some have been dismembered and some have been murdered in cold blood. Graves have been violated and dead bodies have been exhumed for ritual purposes.

Malawi has an estimated population of 10,000 people with albinism. Since 2014, 65 albinos have either been killed or dismembered or have had their dead bodies exhumed despite efforts by authorities to prevent these crimes. In May 2016, the UN envoy on albino issues warned that “albinos in Malawi risk extinction if no robust measures are put in place to stop this senseless evil violence”.

People with albinism are predominantly marginalised and their health and social care needs are ignored. Despite the numerous health challenges they face, they receive very little if not no support in mainstream education and consequently many people drop out from school. This has perpetuated the vicious cycle of poverty amidst a multitude of health challenges.

It is against this background that the Maravi Heritage Foundation has embarked on a project to address some of the socioeconomic challenges that people with albinism face. The top priority is to protect their right to life by arming all albinos in Malawi with panic alarms as well training community support groups to encourage community participation in strengthening their security.

We therefore urgently appeal for funding to purchase the SOS devices to enable them to raise an alarm when they are in distress and need to be rescued from their assailants.  We also plan to supply them with sun-creams to protect their skin from harmful UV light and to work with local NGOs in sensitizing the local masses on challenges people with albinism face in their day to day life.

We thank you so much for your donations. Together we can save lives.
