On November 6th, 2014 Heather Alberti was planning to celebrate her 37th birthday, but instead she was given the devastating news that she had a very aggressive form of uterine cancer and it was already at Stage 3C at the time of her diagnosis.
Heather’s doctors took aggressive steps to cure her, which included surgery and months of chemotherapy before the cancer went into remission. Even though Tony and Heather knew this was an aggressive and rare form of uterine cancer, they weren’t prepared to go to battle just 15 months later.
Heather’s second battle started back up in 2016 with the news that the cancer had metastasized throughout her abdomen and so she underwent 11 more rounds of chemo. However, this time around there were many complications before finally putting the cancer into remission.
Heather’s third battle with cancer started in March of 2018. The doctors knew that chemotherapy alone wasn’t going to cut it, so they leveraged Foundation One testing, which meant that her cancer was receptive to hormone therapy and the hormone based treatment began. While this treatment plan showed promise early, it did not provide the long term results they expected and her regular imaging results showed the cancer was growing!
In recent months, Heather was accepted into an immunotherapy based Clinical Trial at Northwestern Medicine. Again her high hopes were dashed after the first round, because the effectiveness of the trial drug couldn’t match the aggressiveness of the cancer. The world class doctors and research scientists at Northwestern recommendaed she go back to her previous doctors for a different type of chemo that she is currently receiving.
Heather’s Doctors want to use a PARP inhibitor - a drug that prevents the cancer cells from repairing themselves. Although studies and trials show great success, this drug is not yet FDA approved and therefore not covered by insurance. Heather is currently receiving Carboplatin + Doxil chemotherapy and working with her doctors on the insurance appeal process for the PARP inhibitor.
Despite all the challenges thrown at her, Heather is still a very engaged mom of two beautiful boys. She is a swim mom and she loves watching the boys at practice and meets. Heather’s spirits are high and her determination to beat this cancer is nothing less than SUPER HUMAN!
Let’s do our part to help her defeat this cancer once and for all so that Heather can return to normal life as a loving wife and mother.
