Hi, we need some love for this sweet family.
32135104_1534267442293450_r.jpegOn August 13, 2018, my sister-in-law Alayna was involved in a serious car accident in Eagan where she was hit by a semi truck that ran a red light.  Thankfully her sweet two-year-old and baby were not with her and are safe, but missing their mommy.  Alayna was taken to a trauma center and is in critical condition. The most serious issue is the traumatic brain injury she sustained in the accident, but also multiple broken bones.  She underwent surgery last night and has at least one more to go in following days.  She remains unresponsive at this time, and may remain so for days if not longer.  We would love prayers for her brain to recover and support for her family as Wesley takes off time from work to care for his family.  #teamtanaka

From Wesley:

Hi team, just checking in again. As always, thanks again for the continued love and support. It means a lot to hear that people check in daily and are following Alayna’s recovery here! Like before, we continue to wait. ICPs have been pretty stable over the weekend so hopefully tomorrow we’ll get some news from neurosurgery on if ortho can proceed with the pelvic surgery. Alayna’s shown some signs that’s she’s beginning to fight in infection, pneumonia isn’t uncommon for being on a ventilator for that long so prayers that her body can stay ahead and fight that infection off.

She remains responding to painful stimuli from all four extremities but otherwise unresponsive. She displays some movement throughout each day but it’s considered posturing which is an abnormal movement caused by brain injury. There have been some occasional movements that seem more purposeful but the medical team can’t say for sure at this time. She is no longer on any sedatives, just pain meds to keep her comfortable. Either way we remain hopeful, but realistic of the future ahead. As always your prayers are appreciated as we continue to take this day by day. Thanks again all.

Friends and family, again amidst the busyness of everything going on I'm overdue for an update. Part of the reason for the delay is there is no major news, which is good news. The biggest good sign has been that today she has been responding to painful stimuli from all four extremities! This basically involves pinching a finger or toe with a pen and getting some sort of reaction.

Intracranial Pressures (ICP) have spiked a handful of times over the past few days but have responded well to low to moderate treatments and were normal today. As we get through the last day of typical peak swelling, some adjustments will be made with the extraventricular drain to see how she responds to it being reduced and ultimately clamped off and removed. This will also take a few days so most likely her surgery to fix the pelvis will be delayed by a few days. With the location of the fractures, this will be a two part procedure requiring an anterior and posterior approach.

Most probably know me to not be a terribly emotional guy. I'll admit I've probably cried more in the past week than I have in my life. Not just because of Alayna's current condition or our two kids noticing her absence, but often because of the huge amount of support we have received through this. I can hardly read through the most recent posts wishing us well and lifting us up in prayer, or check out the gofundme site and see the generosity from everyone without wanting to cry for gratitude. Not only does this include family and friends, but our church community, coworkers, neighbors, residents of Eagan, and complete strangers! Know that we truly feel the effects of the prayers sent. God is good and we will continue to trust him through this. I hope someday I can thank you all in person for keeping us in your thoughts.

Also a big thanks to the Eagan Police, Firefighters, EMTs, and bystanders who were the first to respond. Who knows where we would be without the first responders being at their best Monday morning. Also the ED, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, ENT, and ICU staff that have cared for us. I've met some great people along this journey and haven't doubted Alayna is getting the best care possible.

Hello, I just wanted to share from Alayna’s husband Wesley how deeply grateful he is for everyone. Alayna remains unconscious, we still need so many prayers that she will regain consciousness if you find a minute tonight.

I wish I could thank each of you individually, you are wonderful and generous people. Thank you.

Elisa (sister-in-law)
