28642276_15220183640_r.jpegIn January of 2018 more than 100 dogs and puppies were rescued from horrific conditions in a Concow, California puppy mill.  The owner was trying to create what she called "king shepherd" using Alaskan malamutes and German shepherds.

The dogs and puppies were living in deplorable conditions. They were emaciated, full of parasites, and filthy. Many of the dogs' coats were matted to the skin. The females were constantly bred and the puppies were sold indiscriminately.

Tina Dunn, the founder of Alaskan Malamute Rescue of Southern California (established in 1985, www.alaskanmalamuterescue.com ), was contacted by animal control to take the malamutes. Tina and I drove up and brought back eleven adults, including three females with puppies, to Simi Valley, CA.  All of these dogs need extensive vet care for parasites, upper respiratory infections, and skin issues. They need to be spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, and groomed to removed mats.

Despite all they have been through, ever single one of these dogs is sweet and gentle. We have already begun socializing them, and that will be ongoing to prepare them to join their new families. They desperately want to be loved, and we will make sure that each of them gets the wonderful forever home that they deserve.

All of this is going to require a great deal of money. It takes seven bags large bags of high quality dog food every week to feed them. The vet bills are already in the thousands, and will rise exponentially as each dog is spayed and neutered. While we have always shouldered these costs for the hundreds of malamutes we have rescued over the past thirty-five years, this time we need help.

Every penny donated goes to helping these wonderful dogs, and no donation is too small. Share their story with every animal lover you know. We are dedicated to giving these dogs the happy lives they deserve, and we need your help to do it.

Some of the dogs are shown below, and we will post updates on them they get healthy and blossom. If you are interested in adopting one of the dogs, please go to alaskanmalamuterescue.com

Thank you for caring and helping. We appreciate it more than we can say.  28642276_15220193560_r.jpeg

Hi Everyone. I just wanted to give you an update on all the dogs. We are starting to go through the applications we have received. Most people are interested in a puppy, but we have 11 young adults (10 months - 2 years) that need homes, so please spread the word. The puppies are still a few weeks from being old enough to adopt.

Pretty much everyone is healthy although the parasite problem was epic, and we're still working on that. We are continuing to get spay/neuters done, as well as vaccinations, worming, and microchips.

The Ventura County Star did a really nice piece on the rescue. You can read it and see pictures and video here: https://www.vcstar.com/story/news/local/communities/simi-valley/2018/04/18/rescued-alaskan-malamutes-up-adoption-simi-valley/515392002/

Please continue to share. We need homes for these wonderful dogs.

Thank you again for all your support!

First of all, THANK YOU to everyone who has donated. We literally could not do this without you!

Here is what is happening: Gypsy, Harper, Yankee, and Kopi have been spayed/neutered. Lobo and one more will be done next week. The nursing moms won't be done until they've weaned their puppies, and obviously, the puppies can't be done yet.

All have been groomed to remove mats and to allow air to reach the dogs' skin. They all continue to be treated for worms, giardiasis and coccidia. Vaccinations will be done once their immune systems are stronger.

The dogs are gradually adjusting to the huge changes in their lives. Rosy is learning to trust people with her puppies, but it's clearly hard for her. Gypsy is still frightened of everyone, and cowers when someone first approaches her. Once she recognizes you, she will wag her tail and cuddle up for some love. Harper and Kopi are also very shy, but they are slowly coming out of their shells.

The three litters of puppies have recovered from their upper respiratory infection and are growing and starting to eat solid food. They are getting lots of love, and are outgoing, happy little pups.

We will continue to update you at least once a week. Please continue to share this page. We are one quarter of the way there!

Gypsy is still learning to trust.
Getting big!
