If you're not a big reader, let me cut to the chase. For the second time in 5 years, the Boulavsky's home has burned to the ground. But unlike the first, this time there were injuries and casualties. Of the 4 in critical care, Elaine and Khrysta Boulavsky have met the top of the list as they were forced to jump from their third story apartment to escape the billowing smoke and flames engulfing the family home. Both have sustained a number of major injuries in addition to losing their family home. All of this only 3 short weeks after Elaine's 2nd mastectomy.

The building was not equipped with a back stair escape, smoke alarms, sprinklers, etc. so they had no option but to jump.

Current injuries:
Khrysta (23): broken pelvis, broken tailbone, fractured spine, deflated lung, lung smoke, and a number of other minor injuries (burns, cuts, etc.)
*Khrysta does NOT have health insurance
*She also is getting married on December 1st and all of her wedding money was saved in cash and checks under her bed.

Elaine (54): broken pelvis (both sides), broken left ankle, broken left hip, and broken left and right tibias, broken ribs, lower lumbar fracture, lung smoke, and her recent (<3 weeks ago) mastectomy wounds had reopened in addition to a number of other minor injuries as well.

The two are separated--Elaine is at MUSC in Charleston and Khrysta at Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach.

Unfortunately, they were unable to save the beloved family dog, Klaus.

We are INCREDIBLY grateful that the two of them made it out alive after jumping out of the third story window and being dragged via rope barely escaping the collapse of the burning building, but thoughts and prayers only go so far.

We NEED your help. Please. I am begging. WE ARE BEGGING. As if one time wasn't enough, this amazing family has undergone this tragedy two times within less than 5 years.

Without health insurance from Khrysta and the innumerable injuries from the two, the medical bills are already soaring beyond the abilities of anyone in the family.

If you want to learn more about the fire or Elaine's health before making your donation decision, here are some links:

We ask that you give ANYTHING you can, from a prayer, to whatever you can afford. Every little bit counts!

Please share this page with your family, friends, your friends friends, strangers, anyone and everyone!

These two are fighters, but they need YOUR help.

Thank you for taking your time to read through this page, and God bless.

p.s. in addition to money, the family is in dire need of clothes, a living arrangement, legal assistance (the building had a number of fire safety hazards and if it weren't for their bravery, the fire would have been fatal). Thank you.

Khrysta is doing well today. She is going through PT and OT and they are thinking about discharging her soon! She can take a few steps at a time now. Woop woop!!!

Elaine is making progress as well! She got a hard cast on her right leg (purple for Huntington's and pink for breast cancer hehe!) and is able to eat/drink more so she is no longer hooked up to fluids. The Dr. said that as of now she doesn't qualify for rehab services as she is only bed to chair and they need someone who can move a bit more, but we are trying to find a good location that she could be taken care of for the next week with nurses! If she gets accepted to rehab she would be out at the end of this week and transfer from this inpatient to the rehab one. If not, she will remain here through the end of next week more or less. Again, dates are difficult here, but baby steps! Thank you again to everyone who has contributed and shared. Keep on sharing!

With love and gratefulness,

Update from the Trauma doctor (for Elaine):
The surgery went well!!
*Rib fractures on both sides will take 8 weeks to heal naturally
*Pelvic fractures were fixed in surgery but put her at risk for blood clot development so due to her lack of mobility ability she has to take blood thinners
*Hip socket fixed during surgery
*Spine fractures are from a previous accident and will be fine
*Ankles/legs were fixed during surgery
*Reopened mastectomy: she will have a wound-vac seal until it re-heals, after her trauma/surgeries are over in a few months she will come back to see a surgical oncologist here at MUSC (~ 3 months) to go for her third mastectomy

*The next step is occupational/physical therapy to normalize her
*Next-next step is TBD
*She will remain at MUSC until OT/PT is completed, at LEAST a week. We cannot yet determine when she will be discharged.

Aunt Lainee is awake and having easy conversations!

Baby steps.

Elaine update!!!

It is 12:30, her surgery lasted a total of 4 hours but it went well.

This surgery fixed her left hip and her pelvis. "Recovery" for her pelvis is expected to take anywhere from 6-8 weeks.

The next and hopefully last surgery will be to re-do her mastectomy since we have learned that the doctor of the 2nd mastectomy failed to remove the breast tissue (meaning that breast cancer, because she tested positive for the braca gene, can and will come back if it is not removed).

Stay tuned for more updates!

With love,

Surgical update!!!

Elaine: Surgery on both legs went well. Waiting to get a set time for a Monday surgery on her pelvis, left hip, and ribs. Unfortunately, the breast specialist discovered that the Dr. who performed her 2nd mastectomy failed to remove a great volume of breast tissue--a blessing in disguise perhaps! This will require an additional surgery but we are thankful that the doctor caught this as this could have been breast cancer round 2...

Khrysta: Back surgery tightened a bolt in her spine. Waiting for time and date on pelvis surgery, but today she took a step!!! She is able to sit up for short periods of time as well.

Both are still in LOTS of pain, but the nursing staff has been fantastic. I (Skye) have been very occupied here at the hospital so I can't get back to everyone, but thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has contributed!! And for those asking about clothing sizes I am finding a good shipping address and I will hopefully have that by tomorrow.

With love,
