WHO WE ARE:

We are Aguas Migrantes, an artist collective based in the Bay Area.  Co-founded in 2016 by Susa Cortez and Vreni Michelini Castillo; two queer migrant womyn artist-educators.

OUR MISSION:

The mission of Aguas Migrantes is to connect a diverse group of artists to our communities through art by exploring and learning about the cultural productions of Guanajuato, with an interchange for exposure to new art techniques.

WHAT WE DO:

Volunteer, Interact, learn and connect with members of our communities and offer free art & art workshops in exchange for their willingness to share their culture with us.

In July 2016, we offered four resident artists a performance workshop and a writing workshop. We took them to a Mexican healing workshop, a traditional corn grinding demonstration and a temazcal (healing sauna). We hosted three walking seminars in key locations throughout the City of Guanajuato and in the nearby mountain towns.

We had the opportunity to volunteer at a local Migrant House in Irapuato, Guanajuato, where we cooked dinner for 22 Latin American immigrants and had an insightful listening session with them .

Artists were able to share their knowledge with the community of La Loma, Moroleon, Guanajuato especially with children and youth, through various free workshops that Aguas Migrantes organized. These included; writing, meditation, sculpture, book-making, collage and printmaking. The culmination of our free workshops ended in a give away of all surplus art materials.

Additionally, we donated two murals in La Loma that activated the visual landscape of this pueblito.

OUTCOME:

Build community, promote art, volunteerism, educate and give.

We accomplished one of our main goals, which was to have a final exhibit in a community center in the City of Guanajuato. We asked the resident artists to respond to the theme of "Integrity" through their work. The final showcase displayed a wide array of work including photographs, video art, sculpture, drawings and two live musical performances.

Our community workshops were particularly successful, as over 50 women & children in a pueblo of 200 participated simply by hearing about the workshops through fliers and word of mouth. Participants along with many others came again the following day for a follow-up activity. An interchange of local cultural productions such as the process of making corn tortillas from scratch for free art techniques was achieved.

We collaborated with many great local organizations such as Casa Migrantes, whom are eager to continue and strengthen its partnership with Aguas Migrantes in ways that are practical, innovative and creative.
