Jay has been a deputy with the Pitt County Sheriff’s office since 2003 and before he came to us, he was with the Greenville Police Department. He also takes the time to volunteer coach with Triangle Special Hockey for mentally handicapped children. Jay is a full-time single father to three wonderful children; Ethan, Jace, and Erin.

Ethan is 13 years old and also volunteers as a mentor at Triangle Special Hockey. Jace is 15 years old and is a special needs child.  Erin, Jay’s youngest and only daughter, is 11 years old. Erin plays hockey for the Junior Hurricanes and Team Carolina, volunteers along with her brother and father at Triangle Special Hockey, helps with the Exceptional Baseball League, assists her father with Jace, and volunteers at other assorted functions. She loves to do the things that all little girls her age love to do.

A few weeks ago, Erin was experiencing pain in her side. She was taken to the doctor, who prescribed antibiotics and she went home. The same evening, the pain in her side worsened and a mass was beginning to develop.  Erin was taken to the emergency room where and ultrasound and bloodwork were done. Erin then had emergency surgery to remove her left kidney along with the mass that was developing in her side.

Erin has since been diagnosed with Clear Cell Sarcoma of the Kidney; a very rare form of cancer. The need to start treatment for this form of cancer is urgent, so Erin is receiving chemotherapy starting today (11/3/2015) at The Children’s Hospital in Greenville, NC. Erin will be in the hospital for 5 or 6 days for each of her chemotherapy treatments, and then she will take two weeks off, and then back to the hospital for another 5 or 6 days for treatment. This cycle will continue for at least 6 months with radiation treatment beginning around Christmas. Jay and Sharon (Mom) are taking turns sharing hospital duties.

The first thing Erin wanted to do when she learned of her diagnosis was to cut her 2 plus ft. of hair so she could donate it to Locks of Love for another child who might need it. Erin is a beautiful person, both inside and out.

Jay is used to helping others instead of being in need of help. He isn’t one that would ask for help, so the people at the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office have put together this “gofundme” page for his family’s benefit. Jay faces mounting expenses including child care for Jace & Ethan, co-pays for Erin’s prescriptions, gas to drive back and forth from the hospital, food to feed his family, and of course all the medical bills that will come.

Please donate and help support Jay, Ethan, Jace and Erin as they go through this very difficult time.
