On the 30th of June, we will be running the Lewa half-marathon, one of the world's toughest marathons, for Kurumba secondary school in the Nuba Mountains.

Our dream would be to be able to raise 51,000 USD
in order to pay one year’s salary to the 23 teachers (18 local teachers for 36,000 USD, and 5
international for 15,000 USD). The salary of a local teacher is 200 USD/month, 2,000 USD/year
(10 months). The salary of an international teacher is 300 USD/month, 3000/year (10 month).
100% of the money raised will be given cash to the teachers.

Kurumba – a boarding and mixed secondary school - is a unique example of resilience and commitment of communities living under conflict in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. After many years visiting the area, we were surprised last year to see that people got together to create a safe space for children to continue their studies after primary. It was extraordinary. For older students joining a secondary school like Kurumba is the only alternative from military recruitment. For a young woman is a lifesaver from early marriage and pregnancy. Overall, education helps overcome the trauma of conflict.
Kurumba started in 2015 with just 55 students, today there are 650, and the number keeps growing. Girls' enrolment is prioritised. From 9 volunteer teachers, there are now 23 qualified teachers. That was thanks to local efforts but also to many friends like us. Now, with your support, there can be more resources for the school to grow with the children! Your help will allow to retain those teachers, which in turn will open more opportunities for other students to join.
Sustainability is key!
With this campaign we want to support quality education by paying teachers in the Nuba Mountains, to provide continuity and stability to the school, and, more importantly, the children. Unaccompanied boys and girls are increasingly leaving to refugee camps in search of an education, a chance in life.
At least 7,000 unaccompanied children left Nuba Mountains in 2018 looking for an education.
