Adipositivity South Pacific Tour!

Donation protected
Hiya, Peeps.

I'm Substantia Jones, creator of and photographer for the fat photo-activism campaign The Adipositivity Project, which next year will celebrate ten years of spreading the message of self love, body autonomy, and fat acceptance. The mission of The Adipositivity Project is to combat sizeist bigotry and to promote body positivity, recognition of an individual’s agency over their own body, and critical thinking about the role commerce plays in our attitudes about fat bodies. I do this primarily with photography, subverting a tool commonly used in promoting body shame, and using it instead to demystify the fat body and give it the respect and visibility too often denied it by the media and popular culture. The message is to love your body, and allow others to love their own.

It’s basically a website full of naked fat people.

If you’re unfamiliar, do check it out. ( www.adipositivity.com )It’s intended to be more warm than hot, but due to the nudity, it may not be safe for work. And for loads more deets—bio, recent press, other projects, etc.—read on after I tell you about some cool travel-y stuff.

In eight weeks I’ll be leaving for a five-week trip to New Zealand. I’ll be a keynote speaker at this year’s New Zealand Fat Studies Conference in Palmerston North, and will be there for the opening of a two-month solo exhibition of my work at Te Manawa Museum.

I’m wildly excited about that whole paragraph. I just stopped and read it again, in fact. Whew.

Due to the spacing of the things already scheduled, I’m obligated to June 2nd through July 8th. Yikes, right? So since I'm trekking to the other side of the planet for five weeks, I thought I'd see if you might like me to travel around New Zealand and hop across to Australia, as well, spending a few days in Los Angeles, too, photographing naked fat people along the way, perhaps doing a bit more speaking and press. I’ve agreed to a half dozen lectures in three NZ cities, with a few more in the works.

I’ve already secured a good portion of the funds needed from Massey University. (Thank you, Dr. Cat Pause and Massey University! You are the wind beneath my wings an’ shit!) They’re covering the two long-haul flights and about a third of my lodging.  But the total for the rest is that figure up there in the corner.

If the goal isn’t met, nobody loses a farm of any sort and I’ll still make it to the conference. But I may have to knock off the US and Australian cities—Los Angeles, Sydney, and Melbourne, likely the South Island as well—where there are already shoots and such being planned. And it’ll mean a lot of non-productive time. I really don’t want to remove those places from the itinerary, but that’s the emergency back-up plan. Girl’s gotta have a Plan B.

If, however, we exceed the goal, the surplus will go toward keeping The Adipositivity Project crankin’, allowing for more shoots more often.

So bottom line, this fundraising campaign is so I may make more effective use of my time in the South Pacific, going more places and photographing more people (hopefully YOU). And you’ll also be helping me do posh things like eat every day and sleep indoors. Fancy!

I hope this is something you’ll want to support. Otherwise, may I tempt you with some choice donor perks? (CHECK OUT THE DONOR PERKS!)

Cities and towns currently on the tour:
Auckland, NZ (confirmed)
Palmerston North, NZ (confirmed)
Wellington, NZ (confirmed)
Christchurch, NZ

If you’re in or near any of these cities and would like to be photographed for The Adipositivity Project, email me. I can't schedule you until the goal is reached, but you'll be added to that city's list in the order the emails came in. There’s no charge to you for the photo shoot, but sharing this campaign on social media and in your groups will help make it happen.

PLEASE SHARE, WILL YA?

And in the immortal words of Sir Sammy Davis, Jr, “I thank you from the bottom, Man. From the bottom.”

DONOR PERKS:
(This is a slightly more detailed list of the perks you may select in the oppressively small space at the bottom of the page.)

$5: Your standard warm, fuzzy feeling. And I’ll out you as a donor on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Unless you ask me not to.

$10:  Same as above, but with double the fuzz.

$20:  You can’t buy a dream. Oh wait. You can. For 20 bucks you’ll get the warm, fuzzy feeling, the shout-out, and I will think about you for no fewer than ten minutes shortly before bedtime, which will create a statistical likelihood that I will then dream about you. Most of my dreams are about sex or social anxiety, but whether or not I disclose the plot of my “you” dream is up to my discretion. Girl’s gotta have her secrets, y’know?

$30:  I’ll call you on the phone and tell you a joke. Blue or not, your choice. If jokes ain’t your thing, I’ll read you some of my more hilarious hate mail. US phone numbers only, por favor. And because some of said hate mail has schooled me in the ways of the world, I’m gonna have to *67 you, so please be “anonymous caller” receptive. Oh, and you still also get the warm, fuzzy feeling and the shout-out.

$40: The fuzz, the shout, and a 2017 Adipositivity calendar before it’s available for purchase. You’ll know what day it is before anybody else does! Guh! (Delivered Oct/Nov.)

$50:  Super extra double secret personalized VIP code giving you half off on all Adipositivity prints for a year. No max, no minimum, unlimited uses for orders going to the same name and address. Non-transferable. But it’s half off on all prints for a freakin’ year! And you needn’t wait for the campaign to end to get your reward. I’ll email it to ya within a day or so of your donation.

$60:  I’ll write an unpleasant letter for you. Dreading telling your Nana you’re voting for a lady President? Thinking it’s time to tell the kids Mittens didn’t really go off to live on a farm which isn’t connected to the rest of the world by any sort of transit infrastructure? I’ll do it. I’ll be concise, but gentle. Perfectly acceptable vanilla thank-you gift, right? Yeah. We’re off to a good start. And let’s just g’head and say all donations come with the warm, fuzzy feeling and the shout-out. Though some of the warm, fuzzy feelings will be fuzzier than others. Read on to learn how to earn y’self a downright fur-covered one.

$75:  Okay. Here’s where it starts getting really good. Be a guest on New Zealand’s Friend of Marilyn radio show, to talk about any fat thing you’d like with host Cat Pause! Cat has interviewed me a couple of times, and it’s fun and painless. And archived! (And by phone, by the way.) A great way to promote your blog, your fat activism, plus size fashion business, art etc.

$100  The radio show Friend of Marilyn ? The one we were just talking about? For a hundred crispies you get to produce an episode! You choose what fat blog is covered, who Cat interviews, the whole shebang. Go, Puppetmaster! GO! (Limit 4.)

$150:  Come with me to New Zealand! (Sort of.) You'll receive a complimentary online registration for Fat Studies: Identity, Agency, & Embodiment. This will allow you to livestream the two-day conference, including my keynote, as well as have access to the on demand videos for up to a year after the conference.

$300:  A 9x7 softcover book of hi-res Adipositivity images, custom made for you. You heard me. The book’s 77 images are chosen by you. How cool is that? Ridiculously cool, that’s how cool.

$500: A natural light photo shoot (by me) in a Manhattan studio (or a public location of your choosing) for you or anyone you like. Can also be a group of up to seven.  Portrait, bridal, family photo, nude… if it can happen in a studio without getting us tossed out, I’ll do it. (And I’ll spring for the studio.) From this you’ll get three edited hi-res jpegs. And if you’d like to give the sitting as a gift, it’s hella transferable. (I’m currently booked through August, so it’ll need to be September or after, okay?)*

$750:  I’ll buy you dinner next time you’re in NYC. You and a guest will join me in a New York City restaurant for a lovely meal with dessert and a reasonable amount of wine. Maybe a slightly unreasonable amount of wine. We won’t be dining at Per Se, per se, but it’ll be fun and delicious. Lunch, if you prefer. Our dinner conversation may include but is not limited to the following topics: politics, religion, the miracle of life (with or without singing), great philosophers with the letter ‘s’ in their names, how damn tasty our dinner is, “only in New York, am I right?”, and naked fat people. WARNING: You may be challenged to a Monty Python quote-off. Depends on how much wine I’ve had.*

$1K:  I’ll MAKE you brunch or dinner (your choice) next time you’re in NYC. You heard me. Same deal as above, but it’ll go down in my apartment and you’ll be eating my cooking. AND YOU’RE GONNA LIKE IT, UNDERSTAND? I’ll be asking a friend of mine to join us, in case you’re a criminal or something. You may bring a friend with you, in case my friend and I are criminals. This, too, will include wine and dessert. I’m not an animal.*

*Any travel expenses to NYC is the responsibility of the donor.

All of the above gifts come with eternal gratitude and fond regards.

Unless otherwise indicated, all perks are available in unlimited quantity and delivered August-ish. The dreams, however, could happen any time. Maybe more than once.
