I'm running for the 2018 Washington State Congressional District #1 Representative position (currently held by Suzan DelBene). The cost to put my name on the ballot is $1,740, or 1% of the salary for the position.
I am running as an independent candidate with no party affiliation, but my stance is socially liberal and fiscally conservative (but not quite libertarian). I haven't run for public office before, but am tired of partisan politics and see this as a way to try to make a difference. My top agenda items as a newcomer will be to champion campaign finance reform, and congressional term limits.
A bit about me. Married with a young son, live in Monroe, WA. I've been a teacher for the last 9 years and hold a BA in Criminal Justice and an MBA in HR Management. I'm a published fiction novelist and a film critic. I enjoy spending time with my family, writing, watching films and sports (Go Hawks), and working with kids.
This Gofundme collection will get me on the ballot, and hopefully in the debates where I can make my voice heard. I don't plan on campaigning beyond that, as wasteful campaign spending is an epidemic in this country, as is the whole re-election process. I want to represent the average person in my district with fidelity and an unjaded political perspective.
The 2015-2016 cycle included financial campaign spending by congressional members of nearly $3.5 billion. This is absurd and unacceptable. My 2018 opponent, the incumbent DelBene, spent $1.5 million alone. Can I defeat her with just $1,740? Your help can decide.
I will need the funds before the filing deadline, May of 2018. If I don't receive the funds, I will likely try again for 2020.
I consider this a hope and dream as the filing fee will give me the opportunity to be a part of American history and change things for the better for everyone, and isn't that the ultimate hope of everyone? Thank you for your consideration.
