Acute Flaccid Myelitis 4 yr old

One of Ohio’s confirmed cases of Acute Flaccid Myelitis started as a viral infection in four year old Elijah. Last Friday night, October 12, his fever spiked and his mother, Allie, decided to take him to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He was admitted to the PICU His care team knew it was one of three types of viral infections that embodies itself within the spinal cord. After further testing, it was determined to be Acute Flaccid Myelitis. He is one of the few in Ohio this year confirmed with this Polio-Like virus and Allie was told, he will remain inpatient at CCHMC for at least 3 months! Elijah is currently being cared for on the neurology floor and will he moved to inpatient rehab paralysis could be life-long. For Allie, his medical expenses are overwhelming. She is a young mother and is very concerned for her son’s health. His condition can become life threatening and many children do not recover. Allie and other close family have been by his side through it all, but not without expense. The hospital food alone is too much for this young family and they’re struggling with costs. Any gift you can make will be appreciated with the holidays approaching quickly. Allie knows her son will be bedridden for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and it’s heartbreaking to say the least, but to go through it all and support him through the next few months will be difficult and she will probably not be able to work as she knows her son needs her by his side.
