Please Help Susan S.

Susan's life changed in an instant when an ordinary trip to the supermarket ended in an assault. But that's not really the end - it's only the beginning.

Susan was standing in line at an assisted checkout at a grocery store in on Carlisle Street in Balaclava when she went to the defence of the young checkout girl who was being verbally abused by another customer.

The man was swearing at the girl and as it was apparent to Susan that nobody - not even the Security Guard standing less than 2 meters away - was going to end this so she stepped out of line and approached the man to ask him to stop. She walked back to her place in line and when turning around was met with a blow to the head - twice. This man followed her and with a closed fist, punched Susan in the side of the head.

Susan was admitted to The Alfred Hospital with a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) - bleeding into the space surrounding the brain. This is a serious type of stroke and her recovery is going to take months to years, at this point we just don't know. She also sustained an injury to her jaw, neck and shoulder and her vision has been compromised.  There is a combination of at least physiotherapy and psychotherapy to aid her recovery and at this stage we're unsure what else.

What we do know for certain is that Susan will have to be out of work for a very long time. The irony is that she made a major career change just over six months ago into one where she can help people stay safe. She had taken on a casual job in her chosen industry while she studied so now there is no fall back for paid leave or income protection.

We are hoping to raise money for Susan to assist with her rehabilitation program and to help with her living costs until she's well enough to get back to work.

Thank you for taking the time to read Susan's story.

Any donation will be extremely helpful and appreciated beyond words.  Thank you so very, very much.
