The ACCTion Pack Takes on Broad

The Philadelphia Problem
Philadelphia is home to one of the largest populations of neglected (stray, abused, abandoned) animals. What’s more, Philly is the only major city to lack a fully-funded animal control service. This means that ACCT Philly operates within the confines of a strongly limited budget pooled from a combination of city contract fees and donations from the public.

It is critical for the Philadelphia community to understand that ACCT Philly is the primary intake shelter for neglected animals. Many Philadelphians would be surprised to know that the vast majority of adoptable pets available at boutique shelters come from the ACCT facility. You can easily see the magnitude of Philadelphia’s animal crisis by understanding the sheer volume of neglected dogs that enter the ACCT facility every year:

Last year, 9,000 abused, stray and abandoned dogs were taken in by ACCT. Of those 9,000, 3,000 will never leave.

So how do we get these beautiful dogs to leave the shelter and enter new, loving homes?

Donate to support the ACCTion Pack campaign
This year, the Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia is launching the The ACCTion Pack campaign, a critical initiative aimed at raising the funds and awareness necessary to get the dogs of ACCT Philly into fur-ever homes. The ACCTion Pack will be making it’s first community appearance by taking on the Broad Street 10-Miler. Our journey begins by making these dogs more comfortable, healthy and calm during their stay at ACCT Philly—which can be achieved in a number of ways. The most immediate need is to replace the dog kennels in the ACCT facility:

When ACCT Philly opened its doors in 2012, they did so with a very limited budget, leading them to outfit their shelter with used, ten-year-old kennels. The dogs sheltered at ACCT rely heavily on the integrity of their kennels to protect them from life-threatening diseases and viruses.  Every new kennel offers a beautiful, loving dog the opportunity to be healthy, happy, and get one step closer to being adopted. In addition, these new kennels will put Philadelphia in alignment with nationally recognized, humane housing standards for animal shelters.

Further, ACCT’s current operating budget only enables it to provide very basic medical care and enrichment services to the Philadelphia community. With additional funding, ACCT Philly will be capable of expanding their current programs (e.g. spay/neuter operations, community animal-food banks, as well as veterinary treatments).
