In December 2015, our family was hit with the most devastating news in years- Abuela Rosa was diagnosed with stage four cancer and was given only three months to live. Today, almost a year later, she is still putting up the strongest fight we could have ever imagined.
Out of sheer luck during consultations for surgery at Stony Brook Hospital, a three hour drive from home, Rosa's doctor ran routine bloodwork which identified dangerously high levels of potassium in her blood. As a result, abuela was kept in the hospital to be stabilized. We could not have anticipated what came next.
During her stay at the hospital, it was decided that the best course of action was to proceed with surgery, rather than postponing it and risking more severe health consequences. Shocked because of the last minute decision, we were preparing for the worst. During thirteen hours of surgery, 20 pounds of tumors and associated mucous were removed along with 10 pounds of organs (gallbladder, uterus, ovaries, colon, appendix and parts of the liver and peritoneal lining).
With no family nearby to host us, the only choice we have is to drive back and forth between home and the hospital, switch shifts sleeping in the car in the hospital parking lot and sleep on chairs throughout the hospital while abuela recovers. What we thought was going to be a two to three week recovery has now extended beyond four weeks with no end in sight.
With endless complications during recovery due to the nature of this surgery, abuela has remained in ICU since her surgery. The toll on our family has been heavy, with financial obligations that we can no longer keep up with because we have exhausted all resources throughout this past year.
I would have never imagined a day would come that we would need to ask for help from our family, friends, and even strangers, but I regretfully say that the day has come. I currently work two jobs, seven days a week, to contribute what I can, but between hospital bills, traveling, and my father's recent unemployment,
our family has no option but to ask for the kindness of everyone out there who can assist us through this troubled time so that we can keep our home and try to make ends meet. Just sharing our story would mean the world to us right now.
It is with the utmost humbleness and gratitude that we share this story with you in hopes to reignite the light at the end of the tunnel for our family.
We cannot adequately express our deepest appreciation for your continued support and blessings through this time. When we are in a position to do so, we will pay forward the love and support we generously receive.

I am proud of my daughter's strong sense and display of humility in establishing this gofundme page to seek help in our and my mother's name, it's sobering and heart wrenching. I want to personally thank each and everyone of you, who took the time to read, share and if possible donate. I thank you from the deepest core of my soul, all of you, family, friends, and total strangers, the unsung, unrecognized heroes, true earth angels, who, through selfless acts of kindness, brighten the human spirit and shine hope where there seems to be none. Rest assured, I promise, as soon as I regain full employment and income, we will end this effort, any and all money will only be used for directly related medical expenses and the most basic of human needs to maintain our household throughout this struggle, and any amounts left over will be forwarded to similar worthy causes and Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.
