A couple of weeks ago I flew back to Pennsylvania as part of the Mohawk Alumni team that played in the open division at the same tournament as the current E. L. Meyers High School Chess team. Right away I recognized a few of the members of the team by the distinctive blue and gold chess bags sewn out of old soccer jerseys that I proudly carried when I played on the team. After finishing one of my rounds at the tournament I was able to walk around and see how the Mohawks were doing in their individual games. In one of the most important games of the weekend, Victoria Kwok was playing against the Number One board of the team that was tied with with the Mohawks. If she won, the Mohawks would go ahead two points with -1 to the bad guys and +1 to the Mohawks.

As I examined her board, I initially thought that she was dominating the game. She appeared to be up a queen a couple of pawns and positioning. Looking closer though, I was mistaking her king for a second queen. The cross denoting it as the most important piece on the board had long ago fallen off. The team is still playing with the original equipment that is now over a decade old. These boards have survived numerous bughouse tournaments, intense blitz matches and countless serious games. Even with a cross-dressing king, Victoria handily won that match and helped to secure the first ever state title for the Mohawk Chess Team. The years are starting to show in the equipment and your donation can help to outfit the state champions with new equipment to match their new trophies.

In talking to Mr. Elias in between rounds he told me that this extremely talented group of kids was missing past state place winners. They got left at home because another hotel room would have been too expensive. He also mentioned that he had started a chess class at Meyers. Instead of wasting periods in study hall playing Pitch or Egyptian Rat Slap students at Meyers now have the option of collecting points for analyzing a famous chess game, playing an annotated game against a classmate or writing a summary of any of the numerous research studies on the benefits of playing chess. Some of my fondest high school memories are from playing on the Chess team. Mr. Elias was always willing to help and he has created an extremely welcoming environment for students that might be bullied in any other club. Donate now to help support this environment! Help to send more Mohawks to Chess states next year so that they can bring home another state title.

The team was featured in an awesome write up in the Times-Leader:  Please share this campaign and donate to help out!

If you donate:

$1- You show your support for the awesome work that Mr. Elias is doing with the chess club.

$30- You can buy a new chess set for the club and make sure that the team doesn’t have any cross-dressing kings in important matches at states.

$50- You can get a new chess clock for the club.

$150-  Send a student to states with a brand new board and new clock. The state champs need to show up in style next year to defend their title.

All of the donations will be turned over to Mr. Elias to use as he sees fit and every little bit helps! Thank you in advance!

A proud chess nerd for life,

Adam Iseman
