A Walk for Tyler Trent

Hi everyone! My name is Aaron Lai and I'm a student at Purdue University. As some of you know, Tyler Trent was a Purdue student who fought against osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The 20-year-old freshman from Carmel, Indiana, majored in information and business analytics with minors in journalism and statistics and dreams of a career in sports analytics. He was also a philanthropist with a goal to reach $1 million for cancer research and has already raised $800k! In his free time, Tyler was a dedicated fan of Purdue sports and made sure to attend games whenever he could. Tyler is an inspiration to me because he never let cancer define who he was or the life he would live. His never give up attitude embodied the spirit of being a Boilermaker. In his honor, I will be walking from Purdue University to Indiana University on Feb 16, 2019, for the basketball game. The walk is 100 miles and will be split between two or three days. The purpose of this walk is to raise money and spread awareness for Tyler Trent's Cancer Research Endowment. This Endowment funds Cancer Research at the Purdue University Center of Cancer Research. All donations will be matched by the Walther Cancer Foundation (If you donate $10 they will donate an additional $10)! About Osteosarcoma: Cancer starts when cells in the body begin to grow out of control. Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer, and can spread to other areas of the body. Osteosarcoma starts in the bones. The cancer cells in these tumors look like early forms of bone cells. If not discovered and treated, it will spread. Only 450 cases of osteosarcoma are recorded in children and adolescents every year in the United States. If treated before it spreads, the five-year survival rate is between 60 and 80 percent. Recurrent osteosarcoma occurs in 30 to 50 percent of patients with initialized local disease. If the disease has spread to the lungs, the long-term survival rate is about 40 percent. Once it spreads to other organs, chance of survival drops to 15 to 30 percent.

About me: I am from Troy, Michigan and am currently studying Social Studies Education in my Junior year at Purdue. I'm also a part of Delta Chi Fraternity as philanthropy chair. Tyler Trent reminded me of my Grandfather who had lung cancer. My Grandfather lived on his own terms despite the terminal illness and never gave up the fight. Going to the same school with Tyler and seeing his tremendous spirit and energy motivated me to plan this event.
