Fuji-A Torn ACL is No Longer a Death Sentence

Tax deductible
On August 4th a big, goofy and very sweet 6 year old Akita was surrendered to an LA based shelter after his owner could no longer keep him because of his housing situation. Fuji, was happy and healthy when he was dropped off – he was already neutered and having passed all of his temperament tests – was ready to be adopted. Ten days later, a staffer at AC noticed that Fuji was limping in his run…the shelter vet re-examined Fuji and determined that he had either torn his ACL or meniscus on his right hind leg sometime over the prior 10 days. No one knows how or when, but it’s presumed he was injured while his kennel was being hosed out and cleaned. The shelter vet prescribed cage rest and anti-inflammatory medication and was hopeful the leg would heal on its own. No one saw what happened to Fuji or HOW it happened but after further evaluation it was determined that he was not healing and the shelter could not perform the required surgery. A few days ago, Fuji was “orange listed” (a precursor to being “red” (euthanasia) listed and Saturday, September 21st was the date this sweet, otherwise healthy, 6 year old Akita would be euthanized at the shelter.

Please watch this video all the way through and turn up the sound - you will hear Fuji whimpering with each painful step.

Akita Angels has been monitoring Fuji since his arrival at the “No Kill LA” shelter – like all rescues, they have no room, but they had remained in contact w/ the shelter’s rescue liaison that they would take Fuji should he need rescue.  Up to the point that Fuji’s injuries were discovered he was NOT in danger - Fuji had passed his temperament test with flying colors and was placed on the adoption floor until he became injured. Now Fuji is urgent - with only 3 days left until his life would be ended. Akita Angels immediately committed to taking Fuji into rescue, and began making arrangements for his exit and to get his medical records and xrays to the orthopedic surgeon.

Fuji will be exiting the shelter under the care of Akita Angels tomorrow, Thursday (9/18) at 8AM – he will go straight from the shelter to medical boarding. The orthopedic surgeon will be performing surgery to repair Fuji’s leg on Friday, September 20.

This is where the quote “there is no competition in rescue” really rings true! With the help of a privately funded rescue/shelter (who prefers to remain anonymous) Fuji, through Akita Angels, will have access to their veterinarian, vet staff, surgical room, orthopedic surgeon, medical boarding, and post-op care/ physical therapy, etc. at half the cost of what a private practice would charge (a private vet often charges $5K for TPLO surgery on one leg and that may not include xrays, bloodwork, etc. or post-op care).

Even at the discounted cost, Fuji’s surgery/medical is estimated to be $2500-2700 (includes pre-and post op x-rays, bloodwork, meds and surgery) and then we need $15 a day for medical boarding and post-op physical therapy for 5 weeks, transport fees, and more – this totals up to approximately $3,500 - incredibly reasonable, but still a monumental expense for a small rescue.

Please help Akita Angels cover Fuji’s medical expenses so that he has a future with four on the floor!
