A Response to Racism

On February 1st 2019, racist graffiti was found in a bathroom at Framingham State University (FSU). Another crime was committed on February 27th 2019 (a note with a racial slur was slipped under the door to a student's room on campus). During the 2017-2018 academic year, several other racist acts happened on the FSU campus. In total, there have been SEVEN racist incidents that have happened. One is one too many. Six more should have never happened. Actions must be taken...
This is my response. My name is Jesus R.G. and I am a Senior at FSU. I plan to compile and share photographs and videos of fellow students, faculty, and other FSU members of color to demonstrate the vital role we play on campus, to exhibit our beauty, to showcase our strength, display our grace, and to give a place to tell our stories. We are proud of our background.
*I want to channel my frustration and anger into something that might bring joy and pride for the community.*
I plan to use 35mm photography to capture portraits of FSU members and hopefully rent a video camera to capture short videos of the same individuals. Developing the photographs and renting any video equipment do require funding. A roll of film costs about $11-15 during development, not including shipping and handling.
Donations are not required, but greatly appreciated. The only thing I ask of you is: To talk about these events and others in this nature. Educate yourself and your peers. Hold discussions on why such things matter. Look for resources to combat these issues, and if there are not any available, look to create some. Appreciate the differences in your community. Defend those who are attacked. Support communities of color. Join movements rejecting hate and ignorance. Listen to those who need to speak. Celebrate diversity.
