A Mystery Writer's Experiment

My name is Orania Papazoglou. Under the pen name Jane Haddam, I write mystery novels. You can check me out on Amazon, and for that matter, on Wikipedia, Goodreads and a few other places. I am in the middle of writing a book in which one of the main characters starts a Go Fund Me page and asks people to send him money "for nothing." For a number of complicated reasons, it's important to the plot and the solution of the mystery that this character succeed at this. I've spent the last several days walking around this, and I finally decided that I have no idea if this would work or not. When you write fiction for a living, you tend to pride yourself on understanding how people think and feel. In this case, I freely admit that I just don't know. So here it is, a Go Fund Me campaign "for nothing." If you send money, I'll use it for cats and licorice and whatever else I want or need. But I'll also do this. The name of anyone who contributes at least the minimum to this will go into a hat from which I will choose three people to be named characters in this novel. And, of course, if no one does, I'll rework my plot. Which I really don't want to do. It's a good plot.

Hi.

This is Matt Deandrea. I am Orania Papazoglou's (Jane Haddam's) son.

As a lot of you know, my mother has been in the hospital and a physical rehab facility for some time now.

When this go fund me capaign was originally opened, she intended to let it run fir 45 days. Before the 45 days were up, she had the start of her medical issues and never closed it.

This go fund me campaign is therefore still open, and will remain open until she is able to take care of it, I'm not sure when that will be.

For those who have asked, yes there is more going on, some of it more serious, than just the sciatica. Unfortunately the sciatica is at the moment an obstacle in treating anything else.

The specifics are her information to give out not mine, she will update everybody as soon as she has reliable access to social media again.

Thank you.

Okay!

To answer a few questions that have come in by email.

First, this campaign will be open for 45 days, which I think is somewhere in the 1st half of March.
I'd check, but it's 3 in the morning, I just got up, and my tech abilities haven't kicked into gear yet.

Second, no, of course you don't have to be in the book if you don't want to. Just say so and I won't put your name in the hat. But I would have asked permission before actually doing it anyway.

Third, yes, I know, I'm really really bad at this.

And finally--yes, the book is moving forward. I am not going to wait 45 days to work on it. I have written myself a couple of escape hatches in case the experiment fails utterly.

But in the meantime, a body has landed on the asphalt and a cat has moved in and conquered the dog, and I am learning all kinds of things about common household implements.
