A Kidney for Kaleek

Since June of 2016 Corey, the family  and I have had to contend with many emotional ups and downs. In June, Kaleek had another surgery related to his 10-year battle with kidney failure. A week later we lost my grandmother and the next week Kaleek was hospitalized do a bad kidney infection. In August, we got word that Kaleek would begin the kidney transplant process. That process started with almost weekly trips to Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham, North Carolina for meeting the transplant team and testing. Then Hurricane Matthew decided to grace North Carolina with its presence in October. Our home along with two cars was flooded.  Our belongings were lost and our home was made unlivable. We lived in a hotel in Wilmington, NC before finding temporary housing.



All while still continuing to make trips to Duke Children’s Hospital for appointments. Kaleek is unable to return to his home due to the mold and mildew that is in the home as a result of the flooding, as this puts him at risk for developing life-threating infections. Then just five days before Christmas, Kaleek and the family received the best Christmas present we could ever ask for. After battling kidney disease for almost 11 years. Kaleek received his new kidney. This was the best gift we could ever ask for.
