A Gift of Time for Jolean Scott

We are living every family’s darkest nightmare.  In late August, Jolean Scott, my happy, athletic, nine-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of brain tumor that takes children’s lives.

The diagnosis had a shattering impact on our family.  It’s like a bomb went off.  In an instant our lives were turned upside down.  We were devastated, frightened, and shocked into disbelief.  Jolean?  A brain tumor?  What?  Why?  How could this be?  Our sweet Jolean.  Oh, dear God this can’t be true!

Inoperable Tumor
But tragically, it is true.  The doctors say Jolean’s tumor is inoperable – they can only shrink it.  Right now, she is undergoing daily radiation and steroid treatment at Children’s Hospital in Denver, 350 miles from our home here in southwest Colorado. Once released, Jolean and her parents will stay in Denver for 6-weeks of outpatient care by the hospital’s pediatric neuro-oncologist team.

A Year to Live
The long-term prognosis couldn’t be worse, and we are struggling to come to terms with it.  We’ve learned that this virulent strain of cancer, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma (DIPG), is terminal.  It is just a matter of time.  The doctors are giving Jolean a year to live.

Life Goes On for a Sister and Brother
Meanwhile, life goes on at home for Jolean’s 11-year-old sister Cassidy, and 6-year-old brother Cecil. With mom and dad in Denver, we grandparents are charged with getting them to school, soccer practice, gymnastics, fed, bathed and put to bed.  It is exhausting.  Everyone’s helping out.  We’re doing the best we can.  But thoughts of the future worry me all the time.  Maybe one more year with Jolean?  This is hard enough for me to write, let alone comprehend.

A Gift of Time
We are asking for a gift of time. Quality time for Jolean and our family. Time for her to enjoy life as fully as she is able. Time to allow us to bring comfort to her and to each other. Time free from the burden of financial worry so that we may bring all our love, goodness and strength to the remaining days we have with her.

Please help us.  Our goal is to raise $105,000 – enough money to help us cover these estimated costs:

· Travel expenses to Denver for medical treatments/therapy:   $10,000
· Household expenses while mom and dad are unable to work: $30,000
· Medical expenses not covered by insurance: $65,000

Your generosity and the gifts of many others will help bring light to these dark days. It will help our family see our way through this painful time. It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child.  Now, more than ever, I know this is true.  I thank you for being part of our village.

Eric Scott, Jolean's father has been added as the beneficiary to this account.   As you can see, your family is blessed with the kindness of many people.
