Why is it that everyone has heard of autism and dyslexia, but few people know about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?
DLD is a common but hidden disability, which affects children’s ability to express themselves in words and/or to fully understand what others say.
I’m an academic researcher who works with DLD and in 2012 I got together with some colleagues to try to raise awareness of language learning impairments.
Since then, we’ve made great strides in achieving our twin goals of putting good evidence-based information out on the Web, and getting experts together to come to a consensus on terminology.
You can see what we have done so far on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/RALLIcampaign
We've had really positive feedback from families affected by DLD, and from teachers, who are often the first to realise that a child is struggling.
We’ve achieved a lot with very limited funding, but now we want to make a bigger splash, to ensure everyone knows about Developmental Language Disorder – that’s the term that a group of experts agreed on in a project we ran over the past year.
Would you be willing to chip in to help the cause? Apart from a 5% admin charge by GoFundMe, every penny you donate will go to making a film: we are a loose affiliation of professionals who care about DLD and we don’t have any full-time staff or offices, so the costs are to cover the time of our editor and film crew.
I will match any sums donated up to our target of £6000 so that we can make a real impact: I feel passionately that children with DLD deserve to have as much recognition as those with other neurodevelopmental conditions – it’s hard for them to speak up for themselves, so can you help them get noticed?
