A Chance For Chandler

2-28-19 PUPDATE: Chandler’s surgery has gone from an estimated $4,000 to an estimated $2.000 due to his testicles finally dropping!! That makes us almost half way there! Please share!!

This is Chandler. I’ve had him for a mere 24 hours, and in those 24 hours, he has stolen not only my heart, but the hearts of every person he’s met. With those mismatched eyes, his monster paws, and the manners of a gentleman- he has us all feeding him out of the palm of our hands!

However, Chandler is much, much more complex than your average 12 week old mastiff puppy.

The Story:

On July 16th, the manager of the vet clinic that I work at called me and asked if I knew of any shelters that would be able to take in a 12 week old mastiff puppy that was in need of a hernia repair- for the “owners” of the puppy were planning on taking him somewhere to be put down. I told her that I would be happy to foster him, and that a rescue that I work with would be able to take him in once he’d healed. I thought, “Umbilical hernias are fairly common, easy to repair, and then the pup would be off to a new furever home to live happily ever after!”

As soon as we got the puppy into our care, we knew something was definitely wrong- this was not a hernia repair. This was... what the heck was it?? Was his penile sheath... missing? Was he cut open and never taken in to be stitched up? We were at a complete loss. All I knew is that this puppy needed help, and I was not leaving him to be put down.

After careful examination by our vet, and a few emails between specialists, it was determined that our little Chandler had multiple birth defects that would change his chances at a happy life.

Defect #1: His Mouth

Chandler’s has a horrible overbite; his upper jaw is so far out that he is constantly biting on his lower lip. Although it does not seem to be an inconvenience to him as of right now, as he grows, it could detrimentally affect his ability to eat and drink.

Defect #2: His Legs

Chandler is bow-legged, which make it difficult for him to run and stand straight. Once again, this is something we will have to watch as his body grows to ensure his leg growth keeps up with his body growth.

Defect #3: His Anus

Chandler’s “booty” is much lower than it should be- the “x” shows where the anus should be. This causes him to have a difficult time pooping. Half of the muscles on his anus seem to not be very strong, while the other half seem underdeveloped. We are unsure if this will affect his ability to hold feces in, however, so far so good besides some constipation.

Defect #4: His(?) Genitalia

The last, and definitely rarest, deformity is that Chandler has a form of hermaphroditism. Chandler has both male and female reproductive parts.

The “lump-like” growth (black circle) at the top of the open skin is what would have been a vulva, however it never fully developed, and is therefore non-functional.

The “rod-like” protrusion (blue circle) at the bottom of the open skin is what would have been a penis, however it also never fully developed, and is therefore non-functional.

We found that Chandler is urinating through a very small hole (green circle) located directly below the anus (where you would typically see the vulva of a female dog).

It is unknown to us whether he has testicles, ovaries, or both on the inside. This specific deformity is called Perineal hypospadias, and it is extremely rare.

Chandler does not let his deformities get him down, so I won’t let them get me down either. But he needs your help! Without getting corrective surgery, Chandler will live his life in constant irritation from his non-functioning parts, and constant urinary tract infections due to his urethra and anus being so close together. This is no life for any puppy- especially this sweetheart!

Donations Needed:

All monetary donations will go towards the sexual correctional surgery that will be taking place at MedVet Emergency and Specialty center. It has an estimated cost of $2,500-4,000 depending on what is going on inside of Chandler’s body. Any extra donations that exceed surgery cost will be used for after-care, medication, reevaluation visits, and possibly further correction surgeries. Every donation large or small will go towards Chandler’s ability to live a happy life.

If you are unable to donate money, but still want to help, Chandler would appreciate blankets, puppy pads/ newspaper, puppy food/ treats, and toys to keep him busy!

There is also an auction in the making to help raise funds as well- if you wish to donate any gently used items (pet care or otherwise), decor, clothes, gift certificates, a service, artwork, or anything else to our prizes, please send me a message on Facebook or email me at [email redacted].

Thank you all very much for your time, shares, donations, and support. Constant updates will be posted, so follow Chandler’s story! Help us give Chandler a second chance!
