Teacher Unexpectedly Paralyzed

#WithWiley

On April 9, 2018, Chris Wiley, a 29 year old schoolteacher heavily involved in the greater Boston community, was taken to Boston Medical Center after leaving school, as it was clear that he was in an emergency situation. It was determined that Chris had an infection on the back of his neck and needed surgery for its removal. During the surgery, Chris had a stroke, resulting in Chris becoming paralyzed from the waist down. At this time, it is unclear as to whether Chris will ever be able to walk again.

In one week, this mathematics teacher at Jeremiah E. Burke High School has had his life completely uprooted. Soon, he will be entering a rehabilitation facility to learn how to adjust to life in a wheelchair while working to hopefully regain the use of his legs. Chris will not be able to work or volunteer for the foreseeable future, and needs our help to pay for his significant medical expenses.

Throughout his life, Chris has made an incredible impact on others as a mentor and a leader. Up until this week, Chris would spend his weeks dedicating his time tutoring high school students at Massachusetts College of Arts through a program called “Artward Bound” and volunteering as a chapter advisor for Northeastern’s Delta Tau Delta fraternity, an organization Chris helped build, committed to redefining fraternities and bettering the greater Boston community.

Chris recently received a prestigious award from the Dean of Engineering at Northeastern, as recognition for helping re-establish SHPE, the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers. In addition, he was recognized for volunteering his time recruiting, mentoring and fundraising with the Black Engineering Student Society, oSTEM, an LGBTQ Engineering Society, the Society for Women in Engineering, and the Society for Asian Scientists and Engineers.

Any donation will help immensely and would be greatly appreciated by Chris, his family, and the lives of everyone he has touched and changed for the better. These donations will not only help pay for his steep medical expenses, but will also give Chris the tools and hope to rehabilitate.

Sharing his page
will also help Chris tremendously in raising awareness for this urgent cause. There is no question that Chris has a long journey ahead of him, but he is an incredible, strong and determined individual who, with our help and support, will continue to have an enduring impact on our community as both a mentor and a leader.
